The wife of an FDNY chief who died in the 9/11 attacks, Joanne Barbara, attacked President Joe Biden during her speech after he carelessly said, “I’m doing 9/11.”
Barbara spoke on Tuesday, 23 years after the event in New York where her husband, Gerard A. Barbara, and almost 3,000 other people sadly died.
She said, “The elected leaders here today show their love and reverence to the families of September 11 or, as our president put it, “do 9/11, which is a pretty sarcastic comment.”
Along with former President Donald Trump and his running mate for vice president, Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were at the event.
“Please remember that the families of 9/11 live it every day,” Barbara said.
Biden answered questions about his plans for the debate with Harris and Trump before the ceremony.
“I’m going to New York for my granddaughter’s birthday.” After the debate, Biden said, “We’re going to watch it, and then tomorrow I’m going to do 9/11.”
As for the Biden administration’s plan to offer plea deals to three men accused of planning the attacks, Barbara was very critical of it. Survivors, Republican politicians, and family members of victims all spoke out against the deal, calling it “outrageous.”
The plea deal would have kept the suspects from getting the death sentence for their crimes.
“Our government should never have thought about giving terrorists a plea deal. It’s ridiculous. Who knows what might have happened if the 9/11 group hadn’t spoken out? Now that it’s been 23 years, the families deserve justice and to know who is responsible,” Barbara said.
