Liberal activists are melting down as President Donald Trump requests the FBI and DOJ to investigate charges that the FBI, possibly with the knowledge of then-president Barack Obama, spied on President Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016.
The DOJ has begun to investigate the charges, which are sure to bring more evidence to light regarding the past administration’s attempts to interfere with the 2016 elections in order to ensure that Hillary Clinton would win. In fact, reports have already emerged that there may very well have been a second spy who was authorized by a government agency in 2016 to infiltrate the Trump campaign.
What is known for certain at this point is that Stefan Halper, a Cambridge University academic and CIA asset, was tasked with infiltrating the Trump campaign in 2016. He made contact with a number of campaign members and attempted to get them to divulge information about any contacts the campaign may have had with Russian nationals. He was working for the FBI; however, he was paid by the Pentagon’s Office of Net Assessment, receiving a total of more than $400,000 in the months leading up to the presidential elections in 2016. What is not known is exactly who authorized the investigation and what was done with any information that Mr. Halper provided to his handlers. There are plenty of classified documents related to the case; however, the DOJ has been hesitant to allow ranking members of Congress to have a look at them.
While the DOJ is taking a hit for allegedly giving into to President Trump’s demands for an investigation, it is interesting to note that the person who has authorized the Inspector General to investigate if the FBI had a political motivation for surveilling the Trump campaign in the months leading up to the 2016 election — and even after President Trump won the election is none other than Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
As anyone who has been following political news will know by now, Deputy AG Rosenstein is the one who not only authorized Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russiagate witch-hunt, but continues to support and supervise it. He is hardly a person who can be accused of being biased in favor of the president or particularly eager to curry his favor. Clearly, the implications of this case are so serious that the DOJ simply cannot look the other way and pretend, as the mainstream news media is doing, that it is perfectly fine for the FBI to assign informants to check out an aspiring politician’s political campaign.
Perhaps the DOJ, unlike liberal politicians and activists, realizes that setting a precedent for allowing government agencies to spy on the political activity of people they don’t like is extremely dangerous. If the FBI and any other agency or member of the former president’s government gets a free pass for spying on President Trump’s campaign, who or what would be able to prevent such behavior in the future?
If President Trump were to authorize government agencies to infiltrate the political campaigns of notable Democrat opponents such as Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden, there would be a massive, entirely justifiable uproar. Even the infamous former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover never attempted such a move.
Naturally, the investigation into the infiltration of President Trump’s campaign is in the early stages, so no-one knows what the result will be. Even so, it has the potential to cause a political earthquake, especially if it comes to light that senior members of the Obama administration or even former President Obama himself authorized the move to spy on a political rival.
Given all of this, it is not surprising that Democratic politicians and their friends in the mainstream media are doing everything possible to decry the president’s move to demand an investigation of this obvious improper use of power by the FBI and other intelligence agencies. Leading reporters have even gone so far as to say that an “informant” should not be viewed as a “spy”, even though both words mean essentially the same thing. Even so, there are sure to be many people who see past this attempt to cover up this blatant misuse abuse of power by the FBI.
As any knowledgeable citizen knows, federal agencies do not have the right to interfere in the political process, and calling them out for doing so is the only way to ensure that future elections are free and fair.
