One of President Joe Biden’s first acts in office was to revoke the Trump Administration executive order “Enhancing the Public Safety in the Interior of the United States” signed on January 25, 2017 — and to impose a 100-day halt on all deportations.
While it is alarming enough that this halt even extends to violent criminals, what is truly puzzling is that this comes while states struggle to manage a pandemic.
As this happened, another massive migrant caravan has formed south of the U.S.-Mexico border, and is heading toward America. They are planning to take advantage of the 100-day stay on all deportations as an opportunity to spread out across the country and get lost in the system. Apparently, they believe the Biden Administration will be more welcoming — which appears to be true.
The problem is that the caravan of 7,000-8,000 people is not practicing any attempts to social distance, many aren’t wearing face masks, and they’ve already broken through military attempts to turn back the flow of people in Guatemala. The military actions included tear gas and attempts to beat back the group with batons.
There were simply too many for the soldiers to manage and the crowd surged ahead. There is grave concern among Guatemalan officials as another caravan of roughly the same size is already on the way.
While the Guatemalan government has made a concerted effort to repel these people from passing through their country, they have been unable to stem the flow. It is a public health and safety concern for their country as well as Honduras, where the caravan originated, has been ravaged by the pandemic. Even Mexico is contributing to the effort by providing six buses to help transport migrants back to Honduras.
While Guatemala and Mexico seem to understand the national security and health problems these large caravans pose, it appears that the Biden administration is rolling out the welcome mat. Allowing these enormous groups to walk right into the country without any consequences for doing so presents a huge public safety risk to all Americans – one that a 100-day mask mandate is unlikely to solve.
Remember, the Biden Administration is taking the pandemic super seriously…
Aware of the rising risk of caravans flooding U.S. borders, President Biden did warn that it could take six months, to put more favorable immigration policies in place. However, it would appear those in the current caravans aren’t willing to wait. More importantly, they don’t believe it will matter.
