China’s state-run news agency, Global Times, jumped into President Biden’s confidential document crisis, citing the disparity in treatment of Biden and former President Trump as evidence that “justice, fairness, and the rule of law are meaningless in US politics.”
The Global Times chastised Republicans for “pouncing” on the Biden classified document scandal, but then said they were correct to criticize Biden for hypocrisy in criticizing Donald Trump for allegedly mishandling the classified material from his presidency- and then called a pox on both the Democratic and Republican houses, dismissing them all as opportunists and hypocrites seeking momentary advantage in the battlefield of American democracy:
“When it was revealed that Trump and Biden had kept classified documents, the US media and politicians didn’t focus on why the two presidents had hidden them, how they were found, what loopholes the US laws and political system have, and how it affects the US’ public’s interests and national security. Instead, they have used it as a weapon to retaliate against their political opponents. In US politics, fairness, justice, and the rule of law are meaningless, but political interests take precedence above all else.
The political climate in the United States is volatile, especially as the 2024 presidential race approaches, and both parties will make every attempt to smear the other. Against this backdrop, Republicans are expected to seize a golden opportunity to contain Democrats.
There is no bottom line or ethics in the minds of many US politicians, and all they care about is power. Politics in the United States has been reduced to a game in which politicians compete to achieve their party and personal goals. They’re only playing a game of cards. The two parties concentrated all of their efforts on political fights rather than government, ignoring the public’s genuine concerns for well-being, national unity, and interests. Their campaign pledges are nothing more than hollow rhetoric.”
“The increasingly bitter partisan battle will significantly weaken public faith in the US government, regardless of which party takes control,” the Global Times said.
Communist tyrannies should be the last people on Earth to blame anyone else for engaging in hardball politics. In China, the governing dictatorship imprisons its opponents in gulags for years before putting them through top secret “trials” in which they may or may not receive legal counsel. Communists enjoy using “anti-corruption crusades” as a way to destroy political enemies and government opponents.
Donald Trump has genuine concerns about the politicized FBI raid on his Mar-a-Lago estate, but at least he did not go into the back of a vehicle with a black bag over his head to suffer in a jail awaiting his closed-door trial, as he would in China. The major concern among free-spirited Americans is that our political bureaucracy is starting to resemble the Chinese government.
Authoritarianism, according to Chinese propagandists, gives stability and competency to government, whereas democracy is a never-ending violent conflict between heartless politicians that hinders Western governments from functioning with Chinese efficiency.
Even if this argument for authoritarianism were to be correct – and one need only look at China’s coronavirus calamity, which was covered in ridiculously clear government falsehoods to keep the people from revolting — the ethical case for democratic governance would remain decisive. It is much better to have standards that a democracy’s politicians struggles to reach than to have a tyrant with no standards and no restrictions on its rulers’ aspirations.
