The Florida Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation has warned that venues that allow minors to attend drag acts may face disciplinary action.
“It has come to the our attention that you’ve contracted with Big Time Operator, ‘Drag Fans’ to provide the use of your licensed premises to conduct the ‘drag show’ performance ‘A Drag Queen Christmas,'” DBPR secretary Melanie Griffin wrote to Orlando Philharmonic Plaza Foundation Inc. “The Department believes that this drag performance is sexual in nature, since it involves the exposure or exhibition of genital organs, simulated sexual behavior, and/or the sexualization of children’s stories. The Department has also learned that Drag Fans’ drag events have been advertised to and attended by minors, including young kids.”
The warning stated that “allowing minors to attend the Drag Fans drag event at your facility jeopardizes your license.” If children were allowed to attend the event, the message threatened that “the Department would take any and all steps possible to ensure that you do not represent a threat to kids in the future.”
The drag event was set for Wednesday night, according to the Plaza Live venue’s website. “All ages welcome,” according to the event details.
The performance is set to open at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida, on Thursday, but admittance is limited to those above the age of 18. Earlier in the week, the group stopped in Fort Lauderdale and Miami, according to the itinerary.
The department allegedly addressed the identical letter to HRM Owner, LLC, telling them not to let children to attend the exhibit at their facility – that letter probably referred to the Miami show.
The department has stated that it is looking into the drag performance in Fort Lauderdale.
“The DBPR is aware of various complaints regarding a sexually explicit performance marketed to minors that took place on December 26th in Fort Lauderdale. The Department is actively examining this incident, which includes video and photographic evidence from the occurrence. DBPR will, as in other incidents, take action,” According to a statement. “It is a crime in Florida to expose minors to sexually explicit activities, and doing so violates the Department’s licensing guidelines for running a business and having a liquor license.”
