New internal records obtained by The Daily Wire show that a DOJ division dedicated to “responding and preventing hate crimes” tracked the Ku Klux Klan and conservative group Moms for Liberty in the same way.
Moms for Liberty was recorded by the Community Relations Service (CRS) of the Department of Justice along with other symbols such as the swastika, Confederate flag, and noose. The emails showed that the Oath Keepers’ and the Ku Klux Klan’s movements were the only two groups with a similar structure.
The DOJ withheld the material from the public by turning down a FOIA request after America First Legal sued on behalf of conservative news site The Daily Wire. They show how, using Google and LexisNexis alerts, the Community Relations Service—whose goal is to “prevent and respond to community tensions, hate crimes, prejudice, bullying, and discrimination,” tracked Moms for Liberty and other targets.
The DOJ did not respond to a request for an explanation of why it was investigating Moms for Liberty. It seems to have followed Moms for Liberty to find school boards thinking about enacting conservative educational standards. Instead of implementing policies on which they had won elections, they advised school boards to submit to the DOJ to resolve conflicts between duly elected conservative leaders and leftist activists.
A DOJ-CRS “Conciliation Specialist,” Hannah Levine, sent emails to The Daily Wire. The emails show her doing little more than creating LexisNexis and Google Alerts keyword alerts to track purported “hate”. She looked for stories about “Confederate flag” and “Washington, DC n-word,” for instance.
A July 20, 2023, search alert targeting “‘moms for liberty’ Virginia” turned up a story claiming that the “Virginia Dept. of Education releases new policy for transgender children.” A few days later, Levine wrote to Roanoke County, Virginia, school board members extending an offer of “our skills in conflict resolution.”
