A former intel official who signed the letter claiming the New York Post article on Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation has stated that he knew most of it had to be accurate and has no remorse about signing the letter.
Douglas Wise, a retired Defense Intel Agency deputy director, joined up with 50 other intel experts in a letter criticizing the report as Russian misinformation shortly after the Ny Post published its article on Hunter Biden’s laptop. When Politico writer Natasha Bertrand released an article outlining the letter, it sank the story’s credibility.
The retrieved information from the Hunter Biden laptop “had to be real,” according to Wise, who told The Australian newspaper that he was aware of this but had no regrets.
“We all assumed that a major percentage of that stuff had to be true in order for any Russian misinformation to be credible,” Wise added.
The letter did, however, include the disclaimer that “we don’t really know if the emails… are authentic or not, and… we don’t have evidence of Russian complicity.” Wise used this to justify the letter, claiming that it never sought to support Hunter Biden.
“The letter had earmarks about Russian deceit, and everyone should think about that,” Wise said. “It didn’t say Hunter was a nice man, it didn’t say he was right about what he did, it was not exculpatory, it was only a warning letter.”
According to the NY Post, the letter included claims such as “the Russians are engaged in the Hunter Biden email problem” and “it is past time for Russia to stop interfering in our country’s democracy.”
Douglas Wise even went so far as to call critics of the letter “conservative journalists, ultra-right wing radicals or conservative politicians.” He also mentioned a meeting between Rudy Giuliani and pro-Moscow Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Derkach.
“They haven’t been paying attention to the substance,” Wise alleged. “I do not regret signing it since the context is critical. Remember, Rudy Giuliani had just returned from Ukraine, where he met with a Russian intel operative in order to gather material against the Bidens. Russians or even well-meaning conservatives may have planted anything in there.”
