Greta Thunberg, the darling of the globalist left and climate change crusader, has once again found herself at the center of controversy—this time for her failed attempt to break Israel’s rightful blockade of Gaza. But the real story here isn’t just about a misguided activist stunt; it’s about the dangerous characters lurking behind these supposedly humanitarian efforts.
Enter Zaher Birawi, a shadowy British-Palestinian operative who has repeatedly faced accusations of ties to the terrorist group Hamas. Birawi, long known for his vocal criticism of Israel and his persistent efforts to undermine the Jewish state’s security, was instrumental in organizing the “Freedom Flotilla” ship Madleen, which carried Thunberg and other left-wing activists on their ill-fated journey.
Birawi currently heads the International Committee to Break the Siege on Gaza and is a founding member of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. He was front and center at the launch of the Madleen, praising Thunberg and her fellow activists for their reckless mission to challenge Israel’s blockade—a blockade enacted precisely because of terrorist threats emanating from Hamas-controlled territory.
This isn’t the first time Birawi has come under scrutiny. Back in 2013, Israeli authorities identified him as a Hamas operative actively working in Europe. His organization, the EuroPal Forum, was even labeled a terrorist entity in 2021 due to its alleged connections with Hamas. Although Birawi denies all allegations and has won legal battles against specific claims, his documented attendance at events alongside Hamas political leaders like Ismail Haniyeh raises significant red flags.
The involvement of someone like Birawi should profoundly concern every American who values freedom, security, and justice. Gretta Thunberg and her allies may view themselves as humanitarian heroes, but aligning with figures who have repeatedly been accused of terrorist connections only exposes their profound naiveté—or worse, their willingness to overlook threats to national security and Western interests in pursuit of ideological goals.
Labour MP Christian Wakeford rightly called out Birawi after Hamas terrorists brutally slaughtered innocent Israelis during the horrific attacks of October 7, 2023. Wakeford openly declared Birawi a “serious national security risk,” even alleging he obtained British citizenship fraudulently through fake documents. While Birawi dismissed these accusations as “baseless,” the pattern of suspicion around him remains troubling, to say the least.
It must be clearly understood that Israel’s naval blockade is not some arbitrary act of aggression—it is a necessary security measure. Hamas, a recognized terrorist organization by both the United States and the United Kingdom, has seized power in Gaza since 2007, using the coastal enclave as a launching pad for missile attacks and terror operations against innocent Israeli civilians. Allowing unchecked maritime access would only embolden Hamas and further endanger Israel’s citizens.
Thunberg and her celebrity companions, such as Irish actor Liam Cunningham, claim their goal was simply to deliver humanitarian aid, like baby formula and rice, to Gaza’s refugees. But there are established channels for humanitarian aid that ensure vital supplies reach those in need without bolstering terrorist entities. Attempting to breach a sovereign nation’s naval blockade is not a humanitarian act; it is a political provocation, pure and simple.
Birawi’s inflammatory statements following the Israeli navy’s justified interception of the Madleen further reveal his true agenda. He accused Israel of conducting “a piracy operation in international waters” and demanded international intervention. His rhetoric deliberately ignores the fact that Israel repeatedly warned Thunberg’s vessel to turn back and consistently emphasized the lawful and necessary nature of its blockade.
Americans must see clearly through the smoke and mirrors of these activism charades. Aligning with figures like Birawi is not just irresponsible—it is dangerous. President Trump’s America First approach demands vigilance and moral clarity. We must unequivocally support Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism, and we must expose those who would ally themselves, knowingly or unknowingly, with dangerous actors working to undermine our closest allies.
