The release of the Muller report has started a renewed push from the left to see President Trump forced out from the White House. However, according to many, even some on the Democratic side of the aisle, pushing for impeachment could severely backfire.
According to John Sununu, who was the White House Chief of Staff for former President George H.W. Bush, a Democratic push for impeachment would be a “serious, serious mistake.”
“I’m making the case that it would be a gift to the Republicans if they failed to let it go and move on,” he said. “I think it will be a very dumb political move for the Democrats…I think the Democrats are going to make a serious, serious mistake because I think the court of opinion is going to move strongly in the president’s favor as people find out the legal malice that was in Volume Two.”
Sununu is referencing an investigation on the Clinton side of the collusion issue.
“I think when Lindsey Graham starts his investigation on the Clinton side of the issue, they will have a difficult time dealing with that,” he explained. “And the more and more they get into the weeds, the more and more the American public is going to understand how political they are.”
While several progressive Democrats are pushing for impeachment proceedings, vocal Democratic leaders including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are heeding the advice given by many experts including Sununu. In a letter to her colleagues, Pelosi said the following about how she believes the left should approach the impeachment process:
“While our views range from proceeding to investigate the findings of the Mueller report or proceeding directly to impeachment, we all firmly agree that we should proceed down a path of finding the truth.”
In other words, Pelosi and other like-minded Democrats want to investigate the president, but stop short of impeachment.
According to Eleanor Clift, there is no need to “rush” the impeachment process. She believes it’s a good idea to wait to hear from FBI special counsel Don McGahn and Robert Mueller.
“I don’t think it will be oversight hearing after hearing,” she told MSNBC. “At some point they will have to decide if they are going to open an impeachment inquiry. There is no reason to rush.”
“I can’t wait to hear from the Sphinx, from Robert Mueller, nobody has even heard his voice. Don McGahn is a witness who can testify to this president’s behavior up close and personal. This is what the Democrats need to do. And they shouldn’t be rushing into a trial in the Senate with Chief Justice John Roberts presiding over a Republican Senate that has shown no cracks unless you count Mitt Romney’s calling this appalling. We may get there. I hope we do get there. But I don’t think there is a rush.”
Despite those who continue to push for impeachment or continued investigations into his “alleged” wrongdoings, President Trump doesn’t seem the least bit concerned over his future at the White House.
“Only high crimes and misdemeanors can lead to impeachment,” he tweeted. “There are no crimes by me (no collusion, no obstruction), so you can’t impeach. It was the Democrats that committed the crimes, not your Republican President! Tables are finally turned on the Witch Hunt!”
It seems no matter how hard the left tries to find it, there is simply no evidence of wrongdoing. If Democrats continue to push for impeachment, it seems that will ultimately be a win for the Republicans as there is seemingly no impeachable infractions to discover.
