WWE star John Cena, best known for his ability to act like himself in highly-paid testosterone flicks, made a big boo-boo earlier this week — he referred to Taiwan as a “country.” The incident prompted the pro-wrestler-turned-actor to issue an apology to the Chinese communist government, wherein he pledges his love and support to China.

Cena made his dangerous transgression against Chinese communism during an interview with a Taiwanese broadcaster to promote the star’s latest release, F9 — the latest installment in the Fast and Furious film franchise. The actor said that Taiwan would be the “first country” to see the film, making him appear to recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty. That’s a big no-no when most of your wealth comes from the graces of the CCP.
Let’s just say this before we move forward: Taiwan is in fact a country. You could make the argument (and we will) that Taiwan is the rightful authority in China — one that resists the yoke of communism to this day. One of the Trump Administration’s boldest moves was to continue supplying weapons to the island to boost its security and independence.
Cena, like the rest of Hollywood, depends heavily on his films doing well in China. Films are only screened in China with the Communist Party’s permission. So, appearing to cut against the CCP’s interests lands you in hot water with the authoritarian censors.
“I must say right now, it’s very, very, very, very, very, very important,” Cena said in a video post recorded in Chinese. “I love and respect China and Chinese people. I’m very, very sorry for my mistake.”
It turns out that Cena has a considerable following on Weibo, China’s equivalent to Twitter. The celebrity has been learning Mandarin for several years. If corporate America continues to follow this same path, the rest of us may have to as well.
