Given all of Joe Biden’s achievements while in government, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) proposed carving his likeness into the famous Mount Rushmore monument in South Dakota.
Pelosi said such things in a recent “CBS Sunday Morning Show” interview with Lesley Stahl. Pelosi’s conviction that Biden is “a Mount Rushmore sort of president” seems to even stun Stahl.
“He is aware of my intense affection for him.”
Are you suggesting that Biden has a rightful place atop Mount Rushmore? Joe Biden and Lincoln?” Stahl enquired.
Instead of comparing Biden to Abraham Lincoln, Pelosi turned around and made a parallel between Biden and Teddy Roosevelt, another Republican who sits on the monument.
“You have Teddy Roosevelt up there. He’s also amazing. I’m not advocating for his removal. However, you may include Biden,” Pelosi said.
In other parts of the interview, Pelosi referred to Biden as “such a consequential president” and asserted that when he chose to withdraw his campaign for a second term in office a few weeks prior, he was at the “top of his game.”
This is an edited transcript of Stahl and Pelosi’s conversation.
Pelosi refuted Stahl’s claim that she spearheaded the attempt to “push” Biden out of the contest. According to earlier accounts, Pelosi was instrumental in the Democratic Party’s purported backroom campaign to persuade Biden to resign.
“No, I didn’t spearhead any pressure efforts,” Pelosi asserted. “Allow me to clarify a few things: I did not make a single phone call. I didn’t give anyone a call. I could tell him without fail that I never made a call.”
“It doesn’t matter what he decides; we need to run a more vigorous campaign,” she continued.
“He is aware of my deep affection for him.”
Newsweek, a left-wing publication, reframed the story to disparage Trump supporters, while even the Daily Beast referred to Pelosi’s proposal to place Biden on Mount Rushmore as “crazy.” The headline from Newsweek said, “MAGA Rages over Proposal to Put Joe Biden on Mount Rushmore.”
