Trump Issues Order to Ban China-Based TikTok Within 45 Days

President Donald Trump issued an executive order last week that would ban the social media platform TikTok from use in the U.S. within the next 45 days.

TikTok is a wildly popular video sharing mobile app in the U.S. It is used by a variety of people of all ages and the videos are shared all around the world on a regualr basis. TikTok is owned by ByteDance Ltd., a company that President Trump and his administration have deemed to be a national security threat because the app has been identified to be gathering data that could potentially be shared with the Chinese government.

What seems to be an innocent video app that is used by millions around the world is actually thought to be international spy technology that could put the U.S. in a very serious and compromising situation.

“TikTok automatically gathers vast swaths of information from its users, including internet and other network activity information such as location data and browsing and search history,” the executive order said.

The order goes on to note the disturbing connection between the popular app and the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing.

“This data threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information – potentially allowing China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information and blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage.”

The recent ban of this potential spying app by President Trump puts pressure on the China-based company to sell the app’s U.S. platform. Microsoft is reportedly interested in the acquisition, and if a deal is made, the president has made it very clear that it will be closely monitored by the Trump administration.

“If Microsoft or any U.S. company buys TikTok this will be carefully monitored to make sure there is absolutely no Chinese involvement in the new company,” a Wall Street executive told Fox Business.

The president has granted a 45-day easement for any company who is currently working with TikTok to wrap up their dealings and end their business relationship. Failure to do so will result in sanctions after the September deadline.

President Trump also signed an additional executive order at the end of last week that partially bans WeChat, a Chinese-owned social media platform that facilitates messaging, social media, and payment transactions.

This new order bans financial transactions with their parent company Tencent, one of China’s largest companies. With over a billion users each month, Tencent is one who definitely needs to be monitored. The potential infiltration could be devastating.

“The United States must take aggressive action against the owner of WeChat to protect our national security,” the executive order said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said: “We want to see untrusted Chinese apps removed from us app stores. President Trump has mentioned impending action on TikTok, and for good reason.”
