On Feb. 2, the Capitol Police named Imran Awan, who was serving as Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’ (D-Fla) IT aide, as a central figure in their security breach investigation.
Then, on Aug. 17, a federal grand jury indicted he and his wife on multiple counts including bank fraud, false statements and conspiracy.
How is the ex-DNC chief excusing these events? The same way Democrats excuse everything else: calling everyone other than themselves a bigot. Let’s go through the real facts behind the case…
Schultz Decided to Continue Paying Awan
Initially, Awan was only charged with bank fraud; however, investigators had been suspicious of him – in relation to the House Democrat breaches – for some time. The majority of lawmakers relieved Awan of his duties after he lost the ability to access the House’s IT network because he was under criminal investigation. However, Schultz decided to keep him on staff, that is, until he was apprehended at Virginia’s Dulles International Airport on July 24.
Awan was heading to Pakistan, which is where his wife had already fled to in March – reportedly under the protection of the Pakistani government. The Daily Caller states that Awan and his family members had been performing IT-related work for Democrats on Capitol Hill for years. Furthermore, since 2009, Awan, his wife Hina Alvi and his brother Abid made at least $4 million.
The ‘Islamophobia’ Charge
After being informed about the concerns related to Awan’s potential data transfer violations, Schultz professes that the FBI and the Capitol Police are ‘persecuting’ Awan.
During an interview with the Sun Sentinel, Schultz said the continuing concentration on Awan is due to what she refers to as the effort of the “right-wing media circus fringe” to detract from the potential ties of President Trump’s team to Russia, as well as Russia’s interference in the election.
Schultz tells the newspaper that those investigating this issue are taking “any opportunity they can to pull people’s eyes and ears away from [the Russia investigation].”
Suspicious Timing
Despite the implications that Awan committed cybersecurity violations and has been accused of deceiving others for financial gain, Schultz calls any concerns related to him as ‘laughable’ and ‘absurd.’ Regardless of the fact that the DNC’s IT Network was hacked while Awan knew the password to Schultz’ iPad, had access to her files as well as to her congressional emails, this remains Schultz’ opinion of her former aide.
A U.S. Marine, who is a black man and identifies as a Democrat, is not happy with Rep. Schultz. During an interview, Andre Taggart informed The Daily Caller that he is angry about Schultz’ claim that the authorities are only investigating Awan because they are bigots.
Taggart played a key role in the FBI investigation into the Awan family, and became involved with them after he rented their Northern Virginia home. While he originally wanted to remain anonymous, he decided to come forward about his knowledge after hearing Schultz’ claim that Awan was being framed by the U.S. Capitol Police due to his religious affiliation.
When Awan decided to flee to Pakistan, he left his smashed hard drives behind and Taggart found them. Awan attempted to retrieve the hard drives from Taggart by threatening to sue him; however, Taggart decided to contact the FBI instead.
The Marine told The Daily Caller that he believes Schultz is devaluing actual discrimination by crying wolf. In addition, he thinks that she is exposing the nation and herself to risks.
“I just want to get these [guys] locked up and exposed, and now,” he said. “The people who facilitated them should also be locked up, as far as I’m concerned.”
“If we can drag Trump and his wingnuts through the mud for the Russia influence that they are having, then it’s only fair that we also expose this s**t.”
Schultz has resisted helping authorities as they investigate the Awan family. At times, she has even been considered a hindrance. Some senior congressional officials consider her lack of cooperation unsettling, even suggesting that the investigation results may lead to Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’ resignation.
