Last Monday marked the annual celebration of Columbus Day in the United States, and leftists opposed to the very idea of America itself wasted no time in taking to the streets to remind all of us how ignorant they really are.
In the video below, you can see a man using a sledgehammer hacking away at a statue of the Italian explorer in the Bahamas. As one commenter noted, it’s obvious that the man had never before used such a tool in his life, so there is at least some entertainment value there. The man was by himself, with cellphone footage captured from a distance. At one point, the man begins yelling at the statue as if it was an actual person.
Remember, these people are not mentally compromised at all — not one bit!
This comes as many liberal elites move to rebrand the October holiday as Indigenous People’s Day, upholding the leftist narrative that Christopher Columbus was nothing more than another European colonizer that left nothing but suffering and death in his wake. This understanding completely ignores the original intent behind the yearly celebration of the historic trans-Atlantic voyage.
Like most things in history, the story of Christopher Columbus comes with a lot of nuance. It is true that Columbus’ landing in Hispaniola led to the displacement of the indigenous Taino people, and that more ambitious Europeans would soon arrive and do the same. This isn’t the reason the Italian explorer is commemorated today.
Christopher Columbus is honored because of the hope he represented — and the courage and talent it took to traverse an unknown and unmapped world. He is particularly inspiring for many Italian Americans who see his feats as a credit to their own heritage.
For the radical left, Columbus is just another statue to be torn down. And as we’ve seen over the years, it won’t stop there. While it began with Confederate monuments in the Southern States, it wasn’t long before America’s Founding Father’s became a target. This anti-western sentiment spread like a plague. Even in the United Kingdom, heroes like Winston Churchill are defaced by leftists with no understanding of what the wartime leader truly represented to the British people at the time — hope.
The fight over political symbolism is more important than it appears. When you attack these symbols, you attack the culture itself. These monuments ought to be maintained and appreciated for what they are — reminders of our past.
