As states finally start to re-open their economies, the conversation on the coronavirus pandemic shifts to how to hold the communist government in China accountable for essentially allowing the entire world to become infected.
This isn’t the first time a virus has spread around the world — killing thousands — thanks to negligence from authoritarian leaders in Beijing. While the SARS pandemic certainly didn’t garner the same overreaction COVID-19 did, it is demonstrative of a problematic pattern in the communist country. They simply don’t care about how their actions affect the rest of the planet. And now, one major organization says it’s time to treat them the same way the United States treats any other hostile power like Iran or North Korea.
When you think about it, it’s truly amazing that China has enjoyed the warm treatment from the U.S. and the rest of the industrial West that it has. While the regime in North Korea may be the one firing missiles and blatantly antagonizing its neighbors, it is the communist Chinese that allow that hostile state to survive in the first place.
Beijing’s military ambitions are also painfully transparent. Despite constant warnings from other regional powers, the country has expanded its military presence into the South China Sea, essentially dominating one of the world’s most lucrative trade routes through brute force.
If nothing else comes from the aftermath of this pandemic, it should be a completely new foreign policy with China.
Remember: this is a totalitarian regime — complete with a dictator and one-party rule — that has been continuously enabled through free trade agreements and a dangerously hands-off foreign policy. President Donald Trump is the first commander-in-chief in the modern era to even hint at treating China as what it is: a geo-political adversary.
Not only is our national health and security very obviously at risk, but so are American jobs that rightfully belong in the homeland.
