It might be racist, according to a professor from California, to be a Taylor Swift fan. The New York Post reports that the professor, who is used to stirring up controversy, came up with the idea following the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl triumph against the San Francisco 49ers.
Melina Abdullah works at California State University, Los Angeles, as a Pan-African Studies professor. After the Super Bowl, she made the decision to voice her opinions to X, writing, “Why do I feel like it’s a little racist to be a Taylor Swift fan?”
Abdullah only said, “Yes,” to another X user’s assertion that “everything is racist.”
“Professor of Pan-African Studies, BLM organizer, Pan-Africanist, Hip Hop educator, daughter of God, womanist, truth-teller, mom,” is how Abdullah describes herself in her X profile. She is one of the co-founders of the BLM Los Angeles branch, according to the New York Post.
Abdullah stated, “I said FEEL, not think,” in response to a question from another X user asking her to elaborate on her first remark. Similar is the sensation I have when I see too many American flags.
She soon made a second post in response to her first, asking, “Why do I feel like this was a right-wing, white-supremacist conspiracy?!?!?” Oh no! #SuperBowl.
That being said, Abdullah has a history of making dubious assertions on the internet. She declared in 2022 that the festivities of Juneteenth were not open to white people. “Attention, white folks,” she wrote. Don’t ask to attend the cookout, please. For Black people, Juneteenth is a day of independence.”
“Today should be White People’s Day of Reparations.”
According to The Post, in 2021, Abdullah attempted to defend Jussie Smollet following his conviction for fabricating a hate crime.
We are abolitionists, and we will never think that the Chicago Police Department (CPD) has more rights than Jussie Smollett—a Black man who has bravely participated in the fight for Black freedom by being present, visible, and loud. Although the whole police force is an unredeemable institution, the CPD is well-known for its lengthy and pervasive history of racism, violence, and corruption.”
Smollet claimed that two white males yelled, “This is MAGA land,” as they approached him in the middle of the night in Chicago. According to the claims, the event happened in 2019. However, Smollet was found guilty of fabricating a hate crime report in December 2021.
