Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations and economics from Boston University in 2011.
Perhaps she should have taken Legal 101.
On Sunday, the bartender-turned-lawmaker said President Joe Biden should disregard a federal judge’s decision to stop the two-decade-old authorization of the so-called abortion drug mifepristone while a legal challenge is pending.
The 67-page order by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, Texas, does not take effect for another week, allowing the Biden administration to submit an emergency appeal. According to Reuters, the US Department of Justice stated that it would.
But forget about the legalities. AOC believes Biden should just disregard the judgment.
Dana Bash, the anchor of CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday morning, was frank with the two-term senator.
“You urged the Biden administration to do nothing more than ignore the court ruling. If you think about it in the abstract, just ignoring a judge’s position is a pretty stunning position,” Bash remarked.
“So my question is, if the Supreme Court rules that this abortion drug should be banned, should the White House follow that decision?” the host inquired.
“Well, you know, I’d like to take a step back and look into the reasons for disregarding this initial ruling as well,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “There is a great deal of precedent for this. The phrase is agency non-acquiescence. And for those who claim this is a first, or that it sets a precedent, it is not.”
Former President Donald Trump, according to AOC, “did this very thing.”
“The idea of constancy in governance until a higher court’s decision is not an unprecedented occurrence. In fact, when the Trump team did it, it was undoubtedly due to a much, you know, a very significant situation when it came to DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that permits illegal aliens to remain in the U.S. if they meet program conditions.”
