Conservatives have long suspected that liberals are out to curtail their religious freedoms. A Joe Biden campaign staff member recently proved them right on Twitter by stating that conservative Catholics, Muslims, and Jews should never be appointed to the Supreme Court because these religious individuals have “intolerant beliefs.”
Biden campaign Deputy Data Director Nikitha Rai went on to fantasize about a time when beliefs held by conservative individuals would be considered “taboo enough” to disqualify someone from being nominated to the Supreme Court. Conservatives have called on Biden to fire Rai, or at least reprimand her. Naturally, the person who won’t even tell the nation what type of judges he would consider appointing to the Supreme Court is either too scared or is simply unwilling.
Conservative Christians, Muslims, and Jews all have cause to be concerned over Rai’s comments. Given the fact that Biden is getting on in years, he may not have full control of the White House even if he does win the November election. In such an instance, it will be people like Rai who would wield a great deal of influence over judicial appointments.
Rai’s comments in this instance pertained specifically to the fact that Judge Amy Coney Barrett was once a trustee at a Catholic school that said homosexual acts were at “odds with scripture.” However, it’s easy to see that the animosity would extend to other beliefs. Anyone who dares to oppose the murder of unborn children or the “cancel culture” movement would be disqualified.
It should go without saying, but we’ll spell it out anyway: this belief is in direct opposition to the First Amendment. And remember, this amendment was “first” for a reason. The Framers of the Constitution clearly believed the “five freedoms” — religion, speech, assembly, press, and petition — were the most important rights for a government to protect.
Anyone who is concerned about basic First Amendment rights should be furious that a senior member of the Biden campaign feels this way. Freedom of speech is what gives liberals the right to trash religion in the first place. However, they should also bear in mind that it also gives religious people the right to follow their beliefs without discrimination.
There should never be a repeat of Judge Barrett’s original judicial hearings — in which California Senator Dianne Feinstein told the judge that “the dogma lives loudly in you.” In a free nation, people have the right to believe what they will, and no government has the right to disqualify experienced experts simply due to their religious convictions. If this ever changes, the foundation of America is lost.
