Speaking this week, President Biden stated that he was willing to talk about a cease-fire involving Israel and Hamas in exchange for the terrorist group’s release of all the captives it currently possesses in Gaza.
Israel has said that its goal is to get rid of Hamas after the terror attack on October 7 that killed over 1,400 people, hurt more than 4,000 others, and held more than 200 prisoners. Biden’s comments are different from this goal.
According to the Times of Israel:
“US President Biden states that any discussions regarding a Gaza ceasefire will only be allowed to happen if Hamas releases all hostages kidnapped from Israel during the October 7 attack.”
When asked whether he would back a “hostages for a ceasefire” agreement, Biden said during a White House event, “We need to release those hostages and after that, we can talk.”
“The comment suggests that the United States might not back Israel’s goal of destroying Hamas, should the 220 individuals who were kidnapped by the terrorist group end up freed.”
Biden declared two weeks ago the fact that Israel had an “obligation” to fight Hamas as well as a “right” to do so. Israelis were very thankful for his help, but now some are questioning whether he really meant to keep his word.
One idea that is often talked about in Israeli media is that Biden wants to “hug” Israel so strongly with words of support that it can’t actually protect itself militarily.
There is a chance that Biden is lying to help get the prisoners freed before Israel invades the ground. But the way he is acting now would only help Hamas win the war by bringing things back to the way they were, which Israel insists it cannot accept.
