According to Haaretz, images of Itamar Ben Gvir, the National Security Minister, handing out firearms to “community security squads” infuriated the Biden Administration, which threatened to stop providing Israel with weapons.
Social media posts by Ben Gvir showing the firearms being distributed “resulted in a diplomatic controversy that threatened to put an end to the arms shipped from the U.S. to Israel.”
Reports say that the Biden administration doesn’t want guns to be given to innocent individuals or used at “political events.”
“The Biden Administration additionally threatened to stop an order of about 20,000 rifles bought by the National Security Ministries from American suppliers,” Haaretz said.
The Telegraph said that pictures supposedly showed Ben Gvir “giving out weapons at political events throughout Bnei Brak and El’ad, two cities close to Tel Aviv.”
The following tweet was made by a social media user: “National Security Minister for Israel Itamar Ben Gvir giving weapons to civilians. In Brazil, the order is to take away the guns from regular people and give them to criminals.”
There was news in the Times of Israel on Oct. 10, 2023, that Ben Gvir’s “ministry was buying 10,000 rifles to train citizen security teams, especially those in towns near Israel’s borders all over the country.”
Additionally, helmets and bulletproof jackets were to be supplied.
