When President Joe Biden said in law school that he had earned a standing ovation for a speech about a case he hadn’t even read, his detractors instantly shot him down.
During his five hours of interviews with Special Counsel Robert Hur, Biden described the purported event; the narrative became public earlier this week when the transcripts of those interviews were made available prior to Hur’s appearance on Capitol Hill.
The president said that after being asked to explain a case in a torts class that he had not studied, he received a standing ovation from his peers for his outstanding 10-minute presentation of the case.
Biden remarked, “Our lecturer was incredibly challenging.” He asked me to talk about a case from your first torts class, you know. Despite not having studied the case, I got up and spoke for ten minutes. Everyone in the class got up and began to applaud.
Many of the comments made on X in the days that followed in reaction to Biden’s narrative indicated that most people did not think the standing ovation had ever occurred.
Someone made the joke, “Then the school manager walked out of the back office and gave Joe a $100 gift card to Starbucks.”
Eddie Scarry continued, “Man believes his own bulls***.”
“Finished his legal class 76th out of 85 pupils… So, yes, this did indeed happen,” Joe Concha made it obvious that he didn’t believe Biden.
Aaron Walker wrote, “You can’t get away with buffaloing a professor for 10 minutes on a case you’ve never read, even at a very lenient legal school like Yale.”
“He ought to have continued fabricating tales about spearheading civil rights demonstrations.” Way more credible than the notion that a group of first-year students would find his analysis of a random case interesting enough to get up and applaud, said AG (@AGHamilton29).
