As of this past week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection was said to have taken agents away from five legal entry points on the southern border to help the Border Patrol stop the flow of illegal immigrants. Cameron Arcand, a writer for Center Square, wrote about the move on Twitter:
This happens at a time when people are paying close attention to what’s going on at the border. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a Democrat running for president, has criticized the Biden Administration over the matter. The leaders of border states are taking more and more action, while the White House doesn’t say much about the situation at the border.
As the situation gets worse, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs is giving an extra $10 million directly to the Nogales Police Department to help them do their job.
“This week, Governor Katie Hobbs announced that she was going to assist the border community to purchase ‘communications technology’ to improve their efforts to secure the border after the federal government changed the rules for ports of entry.”
“I have repeatedly requested aid from the Biden administration at the border, but they have opted to reallocate funds in order to expedite the release of migrants without providing the necessary support and coordination for those in our local communities,” Hobbs stated in a press statement.
‘A lot of people are coming into Arizona, and we can’t lose workers at our ports of entry. We’re happy to give our towns border security resources, but the federal government also needs to do its part to keep our border safe and make sure the migration process is organized and humane,” she said.
Also, officials in the area are worried that terrorists might cross the open southern border:
“The lack of federal officers at some posts, according to a letter sent by Jaime Chamberlain, head of the Greater Nogales Santa Cruz County Port Authority to Alejandro Mayorkas, is a threat to national security.”
Chamberlain sent Mayorkas this letter:
“Mr. Secretary, we ask that this directive be revoked right away and Customs workers be sent back to the ports of entry, where they are most useful. Since this order to assist Border Patrol has left our ports understaffed and weak, we do not want another 9/11 disaster to happen. Washington and DHS are hurting both groups by not spending enough money or hiring enough people to do their jobs well.”
