Delaware may be the tiniest state in the union, but its legislators are making huge waves with the passing of a bill that will ensure that abortion remains legal throughout the state. Democratic Governor John Carney Jr. proudly signed off on the measure on June 9th.
Conservative commentators have since confirmed that the law is a reaction to radical lobbyists’ panic over the possibility that Trump’s justices could overturn Roe v. Wade.
The setback in “The First State” is certainly startling for pro-lifers who have long hoped to reverse the landmark 1973 decision. But what the bill’s critics are finding even more disturbing is the fact that the legislation would essentially make it legal to seek an abortion at any time and for any reason. In Delaware, this means abortions could be performed well into the third trimester—an abomination beyond compare.
Trump’s Promise Sparks Radical Backlash
The election of Donald J. Trump has reignited passionate discussions about abortion rights in the United States. Throughout his 2016 campaign, the president assured loyal constituents that he would nominate pro-life justices to the Supreme Court. With Neil Gorsuch appointed and confirmed as the replacement for the late Antonin Scalia, Trump made a strong move in the right direction.
For the past few months, the 45th president has been a guiding light of optimism for pro-life backers – even considering the real estate mogul’s previous pro-choice sentiments. But hopes to criminalize abortion are quickly being thwarted as blue states scramble to write measures of Roe v. Wade into law, thus circumventing Trump’s future dismantling of the decision.
In wake of Delaware’s drastic move, pro-life groups mustered up no less than $100k to run radio ads asking residents to voice their opposition. Sadly, their efforts were to no avail.
How Has Evil Come so Far?
Countless states have placed limitations on abortions, such as the inclusion of parental consent and the important 24-hour grace period rule. But now, the wording of Delaware’s law will render those measures moot throughout the state. And for conservatives and Christians, it means the loss of what little power we have left in the battle over abortion. So, what exactly does the pro-choice bill entail?
Delaware State News explains, “The bill would allow abortions for any reason and would expand the timeline to let a doctor terminate a pregnancy any time before the fetus is ‘viable,’ defined as ‘the point in a pregnancy when, in a physician’s good faith medical judgment based on the factors of a patient’s case, there is a reasonable likelihood of the fetus’s sustained survival outside the uterus without the application of extraordinary medical measures’.”
Responding to the bill’s extremist approach to life and its value, the Christian community is now rallying to spread education about the issues surrounding abortion. This includes recent revelations that an unborn fetus can feel pain as early as 20 weeks during gestation. Even Trump has sworn to push for a law at the federal level that would make it illegal to murder an unborn child at the 5-month mark.
Petty Politics Triumph Over Morality
Leaders on both sides of the aisle have been weighing in on the news in Delaware as the state sets an alarming precedent for other left-leaning regions. “Delaware is headed backwards,” says Ellen Barrosse of the Republican National Committee. “This bill would open floodgates to Gosnell-style ‘houses of horrors’ abortion clinics.”
In fact, other states have already attempted to pass similar legislation—but the majority, including New Mexico and Connecticut, have thankfully failed. Beyond the murderous ramifications of the bill, other people are wondering why the state is taking up such an anti-Christian stance—and spending so much money to spearhead it.
Wouldn’t it be better to take on bigger issues, such as Delaware’s rampant problem of drug overdose, or their liberal government’s irresponsible budget deficit? These points obviously pose a far more immediate threat to the public than the politically-charged debate over abortion. This is especially true since experts claim it’s very unlikely that Trump will ever be able to overturn Roe v. Wade.
What Can Conservatives Do?
In the aftermath of Delaware’s horrific announcement, it’s imperative that strong believers band together and demand a swift repeal. Continued promotion and support of pro-life organizations is a start. Just look at the amazing work they’ve accomplished since the initial institution of Roe v. Wade almost 50 years ago.
Until blue states catch on, let’s hope President Trump stays good on his word and wins the war over this important issue of life and death.
