The Democratic leader of the now-dissolved January 6 Committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), unveiled legislation last week that might prevent former President Donald Trump from continuing to get Secret Service protection.
The law does not specifically reference the former president, which is ironic given that Trump is running for president again while facing numerous criminal charges. The top-ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee, Thompson, did, however, create a “fact sheet” stating that Trump will be impacted should the measure be approved and he is found guilty of a criminal.
Sadly, no provision in the law already in effect considers how Secret Service protection would affect a protectee’s criminal jail sentence—including that of a former president. Although it is unfortunate that this has happened, Thompson stated, “This was not a possibility we had considered before, but it could actually happen.”
“Thus, it is imperative that we remain ready and revise the legislation to guarantee the American people that protection status does not imply preferential treatment — and that individuals who get jail sentences will, in fact, complete their assigned terms,” he continued.
Numerous felonies against Trump are pending in federal and state courts, including his handling of confidential documents while in office and issues related to elections. He has entered a not guilty plea to all charges and maintains that prosecutors and other parties are conducting a “witch hunt” against him in an attempt to support President Joe Biden, his opponent in 2024.
The passage of Thompson’s bill would “terminate” Secret Service protection for “any person upon sentencing after conviction for a Federal or State offense that is punishable with imprisonment of at least one year” under a section of the U.S. Code. This is a long shot given that Republicans control the House and largely support Trump.
Thompson’s office announced that the bill has multiple Democratic co-sponsors. The bill bears the name “Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act,” or simply the “DISGRACED Former Protectees Act.”
Thompson chaired the January 6 Committee, which recommended that the Department of Justice file charges against Trump for the January 6, 2021, breach of the US Capitol. As the “Unselect Committee of Political Hacks,” Trump criticized the January 6 panel. Trump declared in March that the committee’s other members, including former Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY), ought to go to jail.

I think what is scaring the Democrats worse about Trump getting elected is that he will put the biggest part of them in jail for the crimes they have committed and gotten away with.
