After former President Trump said this week that he wouldn’t be appearing at the GOP’s primary debate in Milwaukee, Fox News took steps to keep his representatives from going.
According to a Fox News memo received by Axios, the network told Trump’s campaign this week that only “participating candidate/campaigns” would be able to get into the debate “spin room,” which is where top fans of candidates talk up their candidate and criticize opponents.
Other campaigns that didn’t make the cut wouldn’t be able to send their surrogates onto the network either.
The 77-year-old former president stated this week that the findings of a CBS News GOP primary survey demonstrated that the primary was finished and that he didn’t have to participate in a debate. This was despite the fact that a significant Iowa poll released this week suggested that the race may be considerably tighter in the crucial primary state.
“Because of that, I won’t be in the debates!” Trump said on social media.
Instead, the former president filmed a pre-recorded interview alongside former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson, which will be aired on social media close to the time of the debate.
The CBS News survey that Trump used to say he didn’t have to go to the debate had a question for “probable Republican primary voters” regarding whether or not Trump would show up to the debate.
The question asked, “Do you believe that Donald Trump should or shouldn’t be a part of the Republican debate?”
73% of those who answered said he “should” go to the debate, while only 27% said he “shouldn’t.”
This week, “Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy said that Trump might be benefiting President Biden by not going to the debates. Doocy said that by not going to the debates, Trump gave Biden the chance to not fight Trump in the event Trump ended up the Republican Party choice.
Doocy said, “Unfortunately, Donald Trump could be helping Joe Biden by avoiding the debates because he gives Joe Biden a reason not to debate him.”
He said, “That had been one of the things that Ronna McDaniel stated to the former president while she was attempting to get him to have the first debate.” But he replied, “Nope, I do not intend to do it.”
Doocy said, “If Donald Trump says, ‘Everyone knows me, I have no need to go through with it,’ then Joe Biden declares, ‘Everyone knows me. I am the president.'”
