Juneteenth Celebrations Marred by Violence

Widespread violence erupted over the weekend at Juneteenth celebrations, despite President Joe Biden signing legislation to commemorate the date as a new federal holiday.

A deadly Lake Merritt shooting in Oakland led to seven deaths in a tragic incident. In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, two people were killed following a concert. Two separate shootings were reported in Clover, South Carolina.

Other reports can also be found associated with Juneteenth celebrations. Why the violence on a day commemorating the end of slavery?

First, there is not always a clear cause and effect. In other words, just because someone was shot at a Juneteenth events does not mean it was connected to the holiday.

Second, it’s also undeniable there were many violence crimes at Juneteenth celebrations. A day that should be known for peace in several cases was not.

The answers to Juneteenth violence likely move beyond issues of race. In addition to the usual predictable factors like drugs, alcohol or gang related violence, there is a growing level of division across the United States.

This division continues to grow despite President Joe Biden’s calls for unity. What’s the issue?

Perhaps media could share some of the blame. When nearly every outlet pushes the latest crime, natural disaster and illness as the top headlines, why wouldn’t people more likely turn to despair? A little more hope, or at least a little least fear-peddling, could go a long way to calming Americans.

Politicians may also share some of the blame. Our nation’s leaders increasingly resort to hateful rhetoric rather than working together to improve America. Too many conversations begin with a clear unwillingness to even discuss options, something that seems un-American by itself.

But Americans themselves are those with the ultimate responsibility to act. We can’t sit and blame media, politicians and criminals without stepping up to do our part to improve the nation, or at least the community in which we live. Even if we can’t pass a law in Washington, we can at least build better neighborhoods for our loved ones.

In addition to Juneteenth, the nation also celebrated Father’s Day over the weekend. While Mother’s Day is often celebrated with flowers and festivities, Father’s Day is often forgotten or intentionally neglected. However, this forgotten day may serve as an important part of changing the violence in America.

In studies of incarcerated Americans, one of the common themes is that prisoners grow up without a father figure—or with a bad one. Imagine the different outcome in our culture if even another 10 percent of dads were more involved and made a difference with their kids.

Even closer to home, what if you worked to invest in your kids and grandkids enough to make America better by at least one family? Conservatives claim to want limited government, but the contrast means doing the hard work of parenting ourselves. We all have a role to step up and do something better to make Juneteenth, Father’s Day and every other day of the year a day that includes more people to live to make America better.

  1. Look to the source of this violence. Shootings happening at an alarming rate. MSM tries to hide the facts. Again look to the source, who exactly is causing this violence.

  2. “Juneteenth ” sounds like a name that a slave would call this ” Holiday ” to me.

The ” ghettofication ” of the English language has probably only just begun. So has the change of men toward embracing their more ” feminine side ” which is being brought about at a fast pace to satisfy the trans / gay communities lust for the world to see their lifestyle as ” normal behavior “.

You can expect ” Reparations ” to be pushed next and even when all of that ” free money ” is awarded to the Black community it will not be enough to calm BLM and ANTIFA etc. to the point where education takes precedence over gang membership – drug sales.

    Same as it ever was.

  3. Good Morning let me ask this why shouldn’t Irish get reparations when they landed in N.Y.in the 1860’s they where handed a blue uniform and where good go fight against slavery what’s up with that there shouldn’t be reparations for anyone it’s part of the history of America it may be a dark time in the building of the greatest country in the World Live and Let Live Stop ✋the Bullshit we are all Americans final words

  4. there should be no bribes to any group of people. none of us were alive to experience any of it, and I doubt that throwing money at a particular group of people who have been dead for at least a century, could spend it anyway. and just how would you prove your family qualified? do you have records? do you know where your family was forced to work? their full names? no,, didn’t think so. so how can you prove without a doubt that you/yours deserve a penny? I could say my relatives were slaves, but you would counter saying impossible, you are white. but why would one groups word be better than another? think about it, and realize this is just a way for some to get something for absolutely NOTHING. no one who is alive today should expect anything, period. you want money? work for it. it is hard, but if you put the passion you have for free money to it, you can accomplish anything.

  5. Wait… you mean woke and black people got together to joyously celebrate a HOLIDAY and they had fights and shootings? I’m shocked!

  6. My family had three brothers that fought for the North in the American Civil
War ,they all enlisted Only one returned ,two were reported killed in battle . .The remains of the two brothers reported killed in battle
    we’re never returned l
Where are my family’s reparations ?

Your point is well said and acknowledged. I am sure there are many families whose ancestors either fought in or supported one side or the other in the civil war in some capacity.
What infuriates me on this topic is how today’s dissenting blacks conveniently or selectively forget that black soldiers actually fought for the Union army.
Will the families of these black soldiers be selectively excluded for “Reparations” because they fought for the Union army which won the civil war?

  7. What about the Native Americans. They were here first. Their homes were destroyed, their families, men, women and children killed for no reason except to steal their land. Are they getting reparations too.? Just more people wanting more freebies. is all that is. And politicians are wanting to give it to them if they will vote for them. Just another way of buying votes.

  8. This is no surprise. Why wouldn’t those that pushed for this holiday celebrate with violence, murder and mayhem? That is their culture.

  9. Not surprising. Take an animal out of a cage, it will act out, however it is still an animal. Take a RAT out of the sewer, it will always be a sewer RAT. Take a monkey out of the jungle, it’s still a monkey acting as if it were in the jungle.
NO matter what, the Animal, it can not be made or coerced into anything else.
