Janet Protasiewicz was sworn in as a judge on Wisconsin’s Supreme Court earlier this month. Protasiewicz got this job after an April election that ended up being the most expensive judge race in the history of the United States. In this election, campaigns and interest groups spent more than $50 million.
Protasiewicz used to be a judge in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. She won her election by 11 points, which means that the liberals now have a 4-3 majority on the Supreme Court. On August 1, she took office in her new job. On the campaign road, she made it clear that she supported abortion rights and was against what she called “rigged” maps that gave Republicans a large majority in the state senate.
Within the first few days after Protasiewicz had been sworn in, the new majority relieved conservative Chief Justice Annette Ziegler of her duties and sacked the court’s administrative director. A radical former judge who once ran for the court is now in charge of the court’s administration. Because these changes were so big, the chief judge said that her liberal colleagues had done “nothing short of a coup.” Soon after, Republican politicians in the state threatened to remove Protasiewicz from office.
In response to the court’s newfound majority, liberal groups have filed cases to try to change the way the state’s legislative maps are drawn, which tend to support Republicans. In a similar way, the Democratic AG of Wisconsin, Josh Kaul, has used this change in the court to speed up a case that challenges a law from the 1800s that said doctors couldn’t do abortions in Wisconsin.
C.J. Szafir, the head of the Institute for Reforming Government, a Wisconsin-based conservative non-profit, claimed that “the change in policy and politics was absolutely seismic. We’re about to get a very liberal state Supreme Court, something we haven’t seen in a long time. And it will really change the way everything works.”
When conservative Judge Patience Roggensack declared her retirement in 2022, the stakes got very high. Wisconsin is seen as a key swing state that could decide who wins the 2024 presidential election based on how its voters vote. For 15 years, conservatives were in charge of the court. During this time, the court supported voter ID laws, passed laws that hurt public sector unions, banned absentee ballot drop boxes, and made it harder to investigate how Republicans spend their campaign money.
Due to increased division among all levels of the government, state supreme court judges now have a lot more power. They decide important things like election results as well as abortion laws.

I just once would like to hear that we got a law abiding judge that really does there job for the people of the people all 100 per cent of the time and not for political reasons. Ever since Joe Biden took office all i read about is how crooked our justice system is– all of them — not a dam good one in the bunch!! All LAWS that is proposed should be decided on only if they pertain to the TEN COMMANDMENTS, that’s why we the people put the Amendments into the CONSTITUTE, to serve justice on the corrupt, if our leaders can’t abid by these laws, they have no place in office.
