President Donald Trump has posted a prayer on social media asking Saint Michael to help him fight “the wickedness and evils of the Devil.” This was just a few days before he went back to Butler, Pennsylvania, where a Democratic donor shot and killed the brave head of the Comperatore family in July.
Most people liked the prayer and picture of Saint Michael defeating Satan that the Trump team shared. In Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, Michael is seen as a savior. The prayer only asks for help getting rid of evil.
But some liberals automatically said they were shocked and horrified, sometimes showing they didn’t know much about history or culture, like Ana Navarro of “The View” did when she responded to Trump’s birthday wishes to the Virgin Mary on the feast of her birth earlier this month.
Robert Reich, who used to work for Clinton and backed Harris, was the most vocal supporter of the idea that the job opening should have happened on Michaelmas, the feast holiday of the archangels Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel. This day is celebrated by Catholics (there are nearly 1.4 billion Catholics in the world and at least 52 million in the United States, including Melania Trump) and Lutherans and Anglicans.
“By God’s power, send Satan to hell.”
“Trump keeps saying that he is God’s chosen tool of anger and that his opponents are ‘evil spirits’ that should be ‘cast into hell,” Reich tweeted. Reich’s fellow Democrats used hateful language to help set the stage for two known murder attempts. “You’re not paying attention if this doesn’t scare you.”
Reich, who is now a professor of public policy at UC Berkeley, must have found this prayer very scary:
“Saint Michael the Archangel, protect us in war. Protect us from the Devil’s evil and traps. Dear Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, we pray that God will punish him. Also, by God’s power, please send Satan and all the other bad spirits that roam the world looking to destroy souls to hell. Amen.”
Pope Leo XIII wrote the prayer after seeing demons attacking the church from within on October 13, 1884, and then seeing an archangel throw the demons back into the void.
