On Thursday, hundreds of Central American migrants gathered in a Mexican border town on their way to a bridge that would allow them to enter the United States.
A majority-male group left the shelter where they had been residing since last week just after noon and traveled to the El Chaparral bridge in Tijuana, Mexico, which is located just across the border from San Diego, California, while American helicopters flew overhead.
Former President Trump vowed to completely close the border if elected in 2024.
“If we find that this really gets to a level at which we’re going to lose control or where individuals are going to start getting harmed, we will shut entry into the country over a period of time until we’re able to get it under control,” Trump said to reporters.
“The entire border. I mean the entire border,” he continued.
When a local official and a human rights activist attempted to persuade the migrants to stay in Mexico and to submit their US asylum requests through authorized routes, tensions at the border grew.
The migrants cried, “We don’t want to!” and marched to the bridge.
We need to work, we’ve left family in Honduras, and we’re already in a dire situation, so let us cross over now, added a man named Wilson.
In an effort to attract qualified workers from among the migrants for the benefit of regional businesses, Tijuana authorities organized a job fair as they have done before.
While some have seized the opportunities, others are simply driven to get to the US.
Before the first groups of migrants started arriving in Tijuana at the end of last week, thousands of migrants had traveled more than 4,400 kilometers (2,700 miles) since starting out more than a month earlier, largely from Honduras.
Yet, since they began to arrive in the border town, there have been conflicts, particularly in the shelter that houses some 4,500 Central Americans.
The majority of the migrants are escaping poverty and upheaval in the “Northern Triangle” of Central America, which includes El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Gang violence in these countries has contributed to some of the worst murder rates in the world.
