In his first speech since withdrawing from the 2024 presidential contest, President Joe Biden spoke to the country from the Oval Office.
Biden said, “I cherish this job.” However, I cherish my nation more.
“Being your president has been the privilege of a lifetime,” said Biden. However, in defending democracy, which holds greater significance than any title and is currently under threat, Serving the American people brings me joy and strength.
Even though he relished his time as president, Biden continued in the 11-minute statement to express his belief that “passing the torch to a new generation” is the right course of action.
The 81-year-old Democrat declared, “I’ve concluded that passing the torch to a new generation is the best way ahead. This is the most effective way to unite our nation. You know, extensive years of experience in the public eye have their place and time. Additionally, there is a place and a time for new voices—that is, younger voices—and that moment is right now.”
Though the president had repeatedly said a few weeks before that he had no intention of withdrawing, Biden oddly provided no reason for his abrupt withdrawal from the contest.
Biden continued by endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris’s bid for the presidency. After gaining enough support from delegates, Harris is now the presumed Democratic candidate for president.
The president declared, “Now, in just a few months, the American people will select the route of America’s future.”
“I made my decision,” Biden went on. “I spoke my opinions. Thank you to Kamala Harris, our wonderful vice president. She has expertise. She is competent and resilient. She has been an excellent leader and partner for our nation. You, the people of America, now have the choice.
Biden reflected on his extensive political career as he concluded his historic address.
“I’ve had the honor of serving this country for more than 50 years,” said Biden. “There is no other place on Earth where a young person with a stutter from low-income origins in Scranton, Pennsylvania, or Claymont, Delaware, might eventually occupy the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office as President of the United States.” Nonetheless, here I am.
According to Biden, he intends to finish out his tenure in office.
