Political pundits, liberals and neocons are literally exploding in rage as President Trump refuses to allow common misconceptions about Russia and its leader to stop him from talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin in an amicable manner.
Former CIA Director John Brennan has blatantly called President Trump’s press conference during the summit treasonous and imbecilic, and called on senior members of Trump’s cabinet to resign in protest. In turn, the mainstream news media has made it a point to highlight all the politicians who disagree with the President’s recent statements.
Former FBI director James Comey came just short of calling for a coup as he publicly called on “patriots” to reject President Trump’s behavior. At the same time, a very real argument can be made that Trump’s refusal to look at Russia as America’s worst enemy is the best course of action not just for Russia but also for America itself.
Jon Huntsman, the current United States Ambassador to Russia who previously served as Ambassador to China when Barack Obama was president, has accurately noted that the idea of meeting the leader of an “enemy nation” isn’t new, as President Ronald Reagan met Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev in the 1980s — the height of the Cold War. What is more, he also noted that while there are certainly differences of opinion and conflicting interests between Russia and the United States, there comes a time when the past must be left in the past so that both parties can work towards their common interests. Because both the United States and Russia have large stockpiles of nuclear weapons, the two countries should do all they can to maintain peaceful, amicable relations. The idea behind the summit is to reduce tension for the good of the world at large.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, a long-time anti-war advocate, went one step further by pointing out that it is not uncommon for countries to have a vested interest in having a particular person or party win an election in another nation. The United States has done its fair share of meddling in international elections, so it should not be a surprise that another nation would want to tip the scales in their favor. The remarks come in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s comments that he wanted President Trump to win the 2016 election. While President Putin also stated yet that Russia did not meddle in the United States presidential elections, the simple fact that he expressed his honest opinion on the matter was enough to freak liberals and neoconservatives out.
Sen. Paul further pointed out that the president is simply doing his best to avoid World War III, and the only way to do so is to meet with “enemy leaders.” After all, if the United States were to only meet with nations that have perfect constitutional republics, its list of friends and allies would be pretty slim, and there would be no way to diplomatically resolve potential crises with enemy nations without an established channel of communication.
While the U.S.-Russia summit is certain to generate a great deal of controversy for a long time to come, the president should be applauded for his willingness to negotiate with leaders of other nations — even if these nations don’t agree with all aspects of American foreign and domestic policy. Clear, honest, amicable communication between world leaders is imperative if there is to be peace and stability around the world.
While partisan hacks and liberals who still can’t accept the fact that President Trump won the election are keeping themselves occupied by creating nasty Twitter tags and calling the president names, President Trump is calmly going about his business of effecting real change by diffusing crisis situations in a peaceful manner, using diplomacy rather than weaponry and regime change to achieve his goals.
