The Daily Caller News Foundation discovered statistics showing that white recruits have significantly declined across all U.S. military services over the past five years. This undoubtedly contributes to the military’s severe recruiting issue.
Statistics from the Department of Defense (DOD), as well as interviews with officials and experts, show that the three services were severely understaffed in the recruiting department during fiscal year 2023 (ending on September 30). This was due to the general public’s increased reluctance to serve in the military, according to the DCNF’s reporting. The DCNF has statistics on the demographics of new recruits that show a fall in the proportion of white recruits and a consistent or even increasing number of recruits from minority groups since 2018.
“The recruiting issue is almost solely responsible for the fall of white recruits,” stated Will Thibeau, director of the American Military Project at the Claremont Institute, in an interview with the DCNF (citing the data).
White Americans make up a smaller percentage of the military today than in the past. This is crucial since there has been no corresponding growth in recruits of Hispanic and Black descent, he said.
U.S. forces are under enemy fire in the Middle East, are on high alert in Europe due to Russia’s aggressive behavior, and are working to strengthen deterrence against China. An analysis by the Heritage Foundation found that the United States military is becoming less effective and is hence less prepared to deal with threats to American national security.
Robert Greenway, head of the Allison Center for National Security at Heritage, said to the DCNF that the recruiting situation is the worst in the all volunteer force’s history, alluding to the precipitous decline in the number of white recruits since 2018. He was speaking about this precipitous decline.
In comparison to the white population, which has declined steadily over the past five years, all other demographics have shown considerable volatility.
According to data collected by the DCNF, 44,042 new recruits to the Army in fiscal year 2018 were white, making up 56.4% of the total. In fiscal 2023, that figure plummeted to 25,070, which is 44.0% of the total.
Black recruits made up 19.6% of the total in 2018 and 23.5 percent in 2023; Hispanic recruits made up 17.2 percent of the total and 23.5 percent in 2023. While the overall number of new Army recruits dropped significantly from fiscal 2018 to 2023, the data also reveals a decline in the actual number of recruits from the other non-white demographic groupings. The rate of decrease was much higher among white recruits compared to the other categories.
It was Military.com that broke the news of the dramatic decline in Army recruits from FY 2022 to FY 2023.
“What we’re seeing is a mirror of society; what we know less of is what is driving all of these things,” an Army officer told Military.com. “No one seems to agree on what’s causing it.”
According to the statistics gathered by the DCNF, there is a consistent pattern across all branches of the military, but the Army may have had the most severe recruiting problems. Fewer white individuals are enlisting than in the past, even while other racial and ethnic groupings are showing no signs of weakness.

The 1st 3 are indeed the primary reasons. DoD’s constant demeaning of white recruits, under which they do not have to sit, now, is a “biggie”! So is allowing in those who, once “transitioning”, cannot be deployed, forcing more deployments on those who are straight! No sane person is going to volunteer for that! The deadly experimental drug mandate was kind of the last straw.

Blending of military career with civilian career after service. An army career that can be used in civilian career. Training in a career along with normal military duties.
There is only negative incentive for straight, white males to enlist. The crazy DEI policies give minorities a foot up for any advancement. Our current administration is pushing us towards WW3. The recruiting issue is mostly caused by the lack of closure suffered by the military because of civilian leadership. Why enlist when your efforts will not count for anything???

The military has broken its own rules for enlistment. No epileptic or diabetic can serve because they require on going medical treatment. Trans persons require on going medical treatment also. Now either allow epileptics and diabetics to enlist or apply the rules equally.
