Police in Indiana reported that they had intervened to save a woman from a home-based prostitution ring in Indianapolis, and they believed that violent Venezuelan gang members may have been in charge of the ring.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, a young girl told a neighbor on Tuesday that she and three other women were being trafficked for sex, prompting the police department to be summoned to a residence on Eagledale Drive.
During an interview, the lady revealed to them that she was transported to Indianapolis from Boston, Massachusetts, to serve as a fundraiser to enable her family’s immigration to the US. Rather, a man known only as “the boss” made her have sex. She was then compelled to become a prostitute.
Alejandro Santiago, 29, was named as the individual who reportedly oversaw the house and handled the prostitute money. After detaining Santiago, the police accused him of three charges of encouraging prostitution.
The individual identified as “the boss” eluded police identification, but they claimed they suspected El Tren de Aragua, a violent Venezuelan gang, was running the prostitution house.
2012 saw the founding of El Tren de Aragua in a Venezuelan jail. The gang has extended from Venezuela to Chile, Columbia, Peru, and other Latin American nations.
According to reports, the gang is responsible for a spate of violent smartphone thefts that have occurred in New York City. According to officials, the two immigrants who were shown on camera striking NYPD officers viciously in January belonged to a transnational criminal group.
Mary Nolen, an assistant director at the anti-trafficking Hope Center Indy, told WTHR-TV that anyone could enroll in an online course to learn how to recognize the warning signs of human trafficking.
“In the US, a large portion of human trafficking is often relational. She estimated that at least 90% of the time, someone they know—a partner or a member of their own family—is trafficking them.
“Knowing what to do might be difficult for those of us or individuals who aren’t around the subject of sex trafficking,” Nolen continued. Generally speaking, though, we advise reporting suspicious activity and providing hotlines for further assistance.
