Trump Derangement Syndrome, a perfunctory term bestowed upon liberals who seem unable to deal with the current administration, seems to still be alive and well, even though it’s been over two years since Donald Trump defeated Hillary in the race for the White House. The most recent example comes from a Virginia high school.
A Virginia high school teacher was recently filmed by another student in the classroom as she “roped” a Trump flag around another student’s neck before calling him a “racist” and a “sexist”. The incident took place at Tabb High School in Yorktown, Virginia.
The teacher in question was later identified as teacher assistant Mrs. Brinkley. In the video, it is obvious the para-educator is wrapping a “Trump 2020” flag around a student’s head/neck as others in the classroom laugh. According to students in the room, the teacher had attempted to take the student’s phone prior to the incident, but other students in the room captured the incident on their phones. This video is the latest in a growing trend among educators attempting to take either administrative or physical action against students who support President Trump.
According to York County Board Chairman James Richardson, the student brought the flag to school as part of “spirit week” activities. The student chose to wear the flag as a way to participate in the week-long celebrations. The video of the interaction has now gone viral, thanks in good part to a Facebook group called “Uncle Same’s Misguided Children.” The parents of the students involved have been notified — as have school administrators, who issued the following statement:
“The York County School Division is aware of the video being circulated on social media depicting an interaction between a para-educator and student at Tabb High School. We take this matter seriously, as we do all concerns brought to our attention.
The York County School Division believes every student is entitled to a safe and welcoming school environment. School Board policy also recognizes school time and school property should not be used for any political purposes. Employees are expected to refrain from engaging in any activity supporting or opposing a candidate or political party while on duty, while on school property during school hours, or while representing the school division.
As such, we would like to assure our community that school and division administrators are continuing to review this personnel matter in accordance with division policies and procedures.”
Presently, there is no word on whether the school will take administrative action towards the teacher shown in the video. Right now, the incident is still being reviewed. Katherine Goff, spokeswoman for York County School Division, reiterated that official policy states that neither school property nor school time are to be used for any type of political activity. Therefore, one would assume some disciplinary action would be appropriate.
Although the county is not being forthcoming about an official position, community members are much more willing to speak up about the incident.
“Wrapped it around his neck. Now you see the true left. You sue the school board, teacher, county and state. You can not silence the First Amendment. Take her check for the rest of her life,” one resident said in a Facebook post.
“I don’t think any grown-up teacher, parent or anybody that’s an adult should wrap anything around a kid’s face,” another resident told Norfolk’s WVEC-TV.
The video doesn’t show the whole interaction between the teacher and the student. Therefore, it is difficult to tell if the gesture was done in jest or was more malicious in nature. In general, though, one would hope that teachers wouldn’t wrap anything around students’ necks, no matter their political differences or motives. Hopefully, there is disciplinary action that authenticates this belief.
