Brexit continues to be a political hotspot for Britain with far reaching consequences around the world. This is especially true for American conservatives who are wisely looking to create a closer connection between the US and the United Kingdom. A botched separation could affect American economic and political ties with the Eurasian continent negatively for decades.
If conservatives in Great Britain are creating a civil war for themselves over Brexit, it is incumbent upon us to watch and provide sage advice when we can.
Conservatives who used to cheer Prime Minister Theresa May now openly attack her in the British press. Among them, Jacob Rees-Mogg went the furthest, threatening a “coup” if May does not deliver a “real Brexit.”
Tories are now begging May not to sell them short. They have fears that Britain will become a sort of vassal state instead of representing a true break between Britain and the rest of the EU.
Why have the threats from Brexiters suddenly blown up? There is one main reason. May’s public actions on the subject have been conflicting as the process moves forward. She admits as such. She is still a prime minister who is trying to save her own political capital as well as deliver on the Brexit that she promised conservatives that she would deliver.
Experts do not know what the final government policy will be. Even members of the legislature who have threatened to resign are unsure of whether they will actually have to follow through on that threat. Everything is up in the air, and the deadline for the final negotiation date is running nearer.
Moderate conservatives seem to have continued faith in the Prime Minister’s ability to make the separation. They are against the threats, even as it looks as though May has changed her position on paying the EU after Brexit takes place.
To be sure, if Britain makes the 40 billion pound payment that some accuse May of negotiating, it will have far reaching effects on the British economy for years to come. It will also affect relations with the United States, one of Britain’s biggest trading partners. President Donald Trump has shown that he does not respect any sort of weakness, and he has not had great things to say about May in the recent past.
The issue that may be lost in the noise is a comprehensive trade agreement with the EU. This will be perhaps the most important aspect of any agreement, as the EU still sits beside and surrounds Britain and provides a convenient trading partner.
The EU has also been quite silent, at least relatively. How will the actual agreement shake out if the other partner does not have its interests known in the public? Conservatives really need to get it together.
Whatever happens in this blowup, conservatives across the world should pay attention. The life of the movement that is in your country right now may depend on the outcome of this battle.
