Gas prices have hit as high as $7 per gallon in the wake of the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack, but even more devastation could be on the way if crazed Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer gets her way.
Governor Whitmer is fighting to shut down a 540,000 barrel a day pipeline running through her state that supplies up to half of the oil and propane used in certain parts of the Midwest. Canadian pipeline company Enbridge, which operates the pipelines in question, is warning the state that shutting down the line would raise prices on propane and transportation fuel and result in supply disruptions.
Republican legislators in the state are backing this assertion, pointing to the chaos that ensued in the wake of the Colonial Pipeline hack. Business groups are also warning that shutting down Line 5 would cost the state billions of dollars in economic activity and result in the loss of tens of thousands of jobs.
Governor Whitmer’s office is far too concerned with getting its own way to listen to reason. Governor Whitmer alleges that there is the potential for a spill in a part of the pipeline linking two of the Great Lakes. However, comments from her office make it clear that the governor isn’t just concerned about the potential environmental impact.
As her office said in an official statement, Governor Whitmer wants to “diversify and expand renewable energy resources” and “get the oil out of the water as soon as possible”. Like the proponents of the Green New Deal, Governor Whitmer doesn’t seem to care that her actions would have huge negative repercussions for just about every single person living in the state.
Just a few days after the Colonial Pipeline was shut down, gas hoarding became widespread as people began filling their tanks and just about any container they could find. Altercations broke out as angry, stressed-out drivers fought each other for access to even a bit of expensive gasoline.
Rising gasoline costs have a direct impact on the availability of food, medication, and other basic needs. All trucks, at present, run on gasoline. If gas prices rise, the cost of transporting food and other items rises, and so do the costs of food and other necessities. Without enough gas, trucks aren’t able to deliver food to grocery stores, medicines to hospitals, building supplies to builders, and the list goes on.
Thankfully, Enbridge is refusing to listen to Governor Whitmer, noting that only the federal government has authority over its operations. The bad news is that the federal government could intervene in Governor Whitmer’s favor, or a court could either order the pipeline shut down or give Governor Whitmer the right to claim the profits. One can hope that saner heads would prevail.
