Democrats Consider New Deal Defeat in the Senate a Victory

The Green New Deal vote in the Senate failed to garner a single vote in favor; however, far-left Democratic politicians somehow think that they won.

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told journalists that she actually told Democrat Senators to vote “present” for the bill rather than voting yes or no for it. The move was meant to protest Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell’s call for a vote on the proposal without allowing for floor time to debate. However, she failed to note if the Democratic senators who voted against the Green New Deal were following her instructions as well, and naturally the mainstream media failed to follow up on this.

Instead, left-leaning news outlets are trumpeting the success of the vote and stating that Democrats “shut down Republican trolls” and “presented a united front” against the GOP. However, the united front, if one exists, has to be one of utter confusion as Democratic senators running for president hype up their support for the Green New Deal on the campaign trail, but aren’t willing to voice that same support in the Senate chamber.

While it is impossible not to notice the obvious fact that Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell called the Green New Deal vote to show up the Democrats rather than support them, it is hard to see how the GOP didn’t come out of the ordeal as the winning party.

Moderate Democrat senators, mindful that their constituents want nothing to do with a bill that would destroy the economy and increase government interference in their lives, have shown the party that they are willing maintain their political careers instead of siding with progressive Democrats. Their “no” votes highlight a rift in the Democratic Party that is sure to haunt them during presidential and congressional elections in 2020. The general public has seen that Democrats, for all their supposed affection for the Green New Deal, are more interested in playing partisan politics than making their stance clear on important issues.

At the same time, the bi-partisan opposition to the bill hasn’t deterred progressives such as Ocasio-Cortez from proclaiming that people are dying because the Green New Deal isn’t the law of the land. AOC also said that the United States needs to either fork over the money to pay for the Green New Deal, or fork out money to deal with natural disasters caused by so-called climate change. Naturally, she failed to note that natural disasters have been a fact of life on the planet for millennia, and some of the worst natural disasters to befall the United States have nothing to do with global warming.

She also lumped climate change-induced disasters together with the Flint water crisis, which makes no sense whatsoever.

The Green New Deal would be a disaster far worse than any sort of climate change-induced natural disaster. It would give the government power to tell people what types of homes they must live in, what sort of vehicles they can and can’t drive, which sources of power to use and more. There are also parts of the bill that have nothing to do with the climate at all. These include Medicare for all, free college tuition, and free money for people who don’t want to work. However, desperate Democrats are eager for anything to appease their radicalized base.

The Republican Senate’s move to make Democrats vote on Green New Deal forced them to take a stand. If the legislation was so wonderful, they now have to explain why they didn’t vote for it. That is anything but a win for the Democrats.
