The vicious attacks being leveled against the U.S. attorney general’s formation of a Religious Liberty Task Force demonstrate its absolute necessity.
The mere whiff of the Trump Administration’s support of Christians and other people of faith has sparked an angry tirade by secular, atheist and LGBTQ forces. For those who thought the free expression of religion was guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, think again. The radical left would ignore and dispatch such inalienable rights as quickly and conveniently as they change their socks.
In a span of just hours after A.G. Jeff Sessions announced the formation of the task force, the far left went on the offensive. Consider the following headlines published by the biased left-leaning media:
“The Justice Department’s latest move is another nod to Christian nationalism by the Trump administration.”
“Jeff Sessions’ ‘religious liberty task force’ part of a dangerous Christian nationalist campaign of discrimination.”
“Sessions’ religious liberty task force panned by civil rights groups, LGBTQ advocates.”
“DOJ Creates Task Force to Defend Anti-LGBTQ Discrimination in the Name of ‘Religious Liberty.’”
“Jeff Sessions’ ludicrous “religious liberty” task force is the real threat to liberty.”
While the angry left consistently hurls hate speech at conservative values, Sessions’ move could prove the turning point in a culture war that has seen Christian liberty take a back seat during the previous administration.
Why the ‘Religious Liberty Task Force’ Matters
Following a series of rulings by liberal courts, the Department of Justice issued a guidance that all government organizations consider the First Amendment right to practice religion on equal footing as secular rights.
Under the Obama Administration, the DOJ clearly favored the advancement of LGBTQ liberties over Christians. As Sessions stated during his announcement, America has become “less hospitable to people of faith.”
In Colorado, the liberal government and courts were forcing a cake-maker to either provide services for a gay wedding against his religious convictions or shutter his business. In other mostly Democrat areas of the country, a florist was being fined for not wishing to participate in same-sex marriage ceremonies and a small church was blocked from public funds to build a community playscape. Liberals were on a clear path to marginalize Christians and make people of faith second-class citizens.
“Let’s be frank: A dangerous movement, undetected by many but real, is now challenging and eroding our great tradition of religious freedom. There can be no doubt. It’s no little matter. It must be confronted intellectually and politically and defeated,” Sessions reportedly said. “This election, this past election, and much that has flowed from it, gives us a rare opportunity to arrest these trends and to confront them.”
The Trump Administration has repeatedly issued executive orders protecting religious liberties and Sessions’ guidance and task force would focus on combating religious discrimination.
Liberals Target People of Faith
With Obama in the White House and his anti-Christian cronies running the country, a series of discriminatory laws and practiced surfaced.
The IRS suddenly targeted Christian non-profits that had a conservative leaning and laws putting gay rights over religious rights surfaced. Secular and atheist liberals had gotten an upper hand and effectively diminished the rights of God-loving citizens. The most troubling aspect about this subversion of the rights of Christians and others is that the left both believes they should come first and that they have the moral high ground.
“This taxpayer funded task force is yet another example of the Trump-Pence White House and Jeff Sessions sanctioning discrimination against LGBTQ people,” Human Rights Campaign legal director Sarah Warbelow reportedly said. “Over the last 18 months, Donald Trump, Mike Pence and Jeff Sessions have engaged in a brazen campaign to erode and limit the rights of LGBTQ people in the name of religion. The Attorney General standing shoulder-to-shoulder this morning with anti-LGBTQ extremists tells you everything you need to know about what today’s announcement was really all about.”
Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Obama-era laws that conflicted with religious rights. In their hateful rhetoric, the left conveniently leaves out the part that the laws created during the Obama days were unconstitutional and discriminatory.
That would seem almost ironic if it weren’t for the fact that Democrats were the party of slavery, founded the Klu Klux Klan, and perpetuate minority poverty through the welfare system. The left has a new enemy — God — and they want American Christians to sit at the back of the bus.
