Trump Trolls the UN and His Critics At the Same Time

During a recent meeting with a bipartisan group of senators at the White House last week, President Trump was accused of referring to African and Haiti nations as “sh-thole countries.” Trump however, denies this accusation, which has sparked outrage from the United Nations as well as his outspoken critics. While the President says while his words were harsh, he did not make the statement he is being accused of saying.

The controversy started during a heated discussion on protections for immigrants coming into the United States from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a deal concerning the ‘dreamers’. According to the accusation, President Trump then allegedly said this statement, which is now being debated for its truth: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

The president then supposedly remarked that the U.S. should be focusing on bringing in more people from countries like Norway instead, as discussed with their prime minister earlier in the week. Trump was also accused of singling out Haiti, indicating that their immigrants could not be part of any deal. He was quoted as saying, “Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out.”

The accusation was made by Senator Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), who claims he was shocked by what he heard the President say.

“I cannot believe that in the history of the White House, in that Oval Office, any president has ever spoken the words that I personally heard our president speak yesterday,” he told the press.

The outrage did not end there. United Nations human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said, “There is no other word one can use but ‘racist.’ You cannot dismiss entire countries and continents as ‘sh-tholes,’ whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome.”

Using his preferred method of communication, President Trump gave his version of the meeting to the world on social media via his ever-popular Twitter account.

“The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used,” the president said. “What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made — a big setback for DACA!”

Trump’s efforts to set the record straight, however, did not seem to do much good, as critics were quick to indicate that his sounded exactly like something the president would say based on past comments. Senator Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) told reporters that while he was not at the said meeting, he did hear about Trump’s comments “before it went public. And what I’ve heard reported is consistent about what I heard about the meeting.”

Flake further indicated that Trump’s comments were not a surprise, and seem to echo what the President has said before about Haiti and Nigeria. “I’m not surprised at the sentiment expressed — it’s consistent with what he’s said — but that he would do that knowing the fury it would cause.”

Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) told a Charleston, SC newspaper that Senator Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) told him that the reported comments by Trump are “basically accurate.” Scott said that, “If that comment is accurate, the comment is incredibly disappointing.”

In stark contradiction, Senators Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.), who were both in attendance at the meeting had a different recollection of the events. “We do not recall the president saying these comments specifically but what he did call out was the imbalance in our current immigration system, which does not protect American workers and our national interest.”

The White House deputy press secretary, Raj Shah did not deny the account of the meeting and in a written statement addressed Mr. Trump’s comments.

“Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people,” he said. “Like other nations that have merit-based immigration, President Trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation.”
