The Hungarian government has asked that the Joe Biden administration apologize for disseminating a “false” tale about a Holocaust monument being damaged.
During a “High-Level Side Event on Globalizing Efforts to Fight Antisemitism” earlier this month, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said that a “Holoca” was committed by vandalizing a Jewish burial site with a swastika, a Russian missile that hit a Ukrainian synagogue, and “someone who had hatred in their heart” tossing a Molotov cocktail at a synagogue in New Jersey.
Western politicians and media have often stated that Hungary is a hotbed of anti-Semitism, notably when the government has condemned the by-his-own-account atheist George Soros, despite the Israeli government rushing to Budapest’s rescue — but this recent allegation has aroused particular fury since the incident recounted by the US ambassador evidently never occurred.
State Secretary Zoltán Kovács, a prominent spokesman of the Hungarian government to the outside world, stated that “representatives of Hungary stood astonished by Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield’s statements, since no such act of vandalism had happened in Hungary for years.”
“In truth, Hungary is the safest place in Europe for Jewish people, with Jewish communities enjoying a’renaissance’ for more than ten years now,” he claims.
The Hungarian Ambassador to the UN promptly sought a public retraction and official apology from the US Embassy, according to Kovács, but the Biden administration has “so far failed to comply.”
This seems unlikely to be because Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield or her colleagues think that a Holocaust monument was really smashed in Hungary — in fact, the portion of her speech relating to the event has been stricken through, with an annotation stating that it is, in reality, Sweden, a largely pro-mass migration, pro-multiculturalism EU member-state, where a memorial was vandalized that was “honoring Raoul Wallenberg.”
“It is reprehensible that the U.S. ambassador made unsubstantiated and misleading claims against Hungary in front of a big audience at the UN,” the Hungarians have said, implying that the quiet, post-hoc clarification on the American embassy’s website is far from enough retribution.
“There was no explanation or apology, which would have been the very least they could do in such a case,” they said.
