A group of Republicans is taking determined action to prevent President Biden’s administration from diverting healthcare resources initially designated for military veterans within the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide services for undocumented immigrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border.
This week, Rep. Mike Bost (R-IL) and Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) unveiled the “No VA Resources for Unauthorized Aliens Act.” This legislative proposal aims to prohibit the VA from utilizing its resources to offer healthcare services to undocumented migrants at the southern border. This move is in response to allegations that Biden’s DHS has been reallocating VA healthcare resources away from military veterans to assist undocumented immigrants.
Rep. Bost, who chairs the House Veterans Affairs Committee, expressed his deep concerns over the situation, stating, “Joe Biden’s failed border policies have led to a humanitarian and national security crisis. Now it appears that he is diverting resources away from our veterans to provide healthcare for illegal migrants.” As a Marine, he firmly believes that any dollar diverted from a veteran constitutes a broken promise to those who have served. He pledged to use his chairmanship to prioritize veterans until he receives the answers they rightfully deserve.
The bill has garnered co-sponsorship from Reps. Jack Bergman (R-MI), Scott Franklin (R-FL), and Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) in the House. In the Senate, Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) are supporting the legislation.
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas apparently confirmed last year to Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) that the agency was exploring the utilization of VA healthcare resources at the border. Reports from the House Homeland Security Committee, overseen by Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), have revealed that American taxpayers spent over $7 billion on Medicaid costs for emergency services for undocumented immigrants in Fiscal Year 2021 and more than $5.4 billion in Fiscal Year 2022. On an annual basis, U.S. citizens are compelled to subsidize medical care for undocumented immigrants to the tune of $18.5 billion. In 2021, taxpayers covered over $316 million in medical care expenses for detained undocumented immigrants under the purview of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
