After the campaign criticized the news organization during a press conference on Monday for printing what it considered to be a “particularly egregiously false” headline on former President Donald Trump’s abortion comments, USA Today seemed to give in to pressure from Team Biden.
‘The will of the people’: Trump opposes a nationwide abortion ban and believes states should decide, according to a USA Today item headlined “After he delivered a video message on Monday morning expressing his desire for states to have the last say on abortion regulations.” Later on Monday, USA Today updated the title to “Donald Trump believes states should decide abortion policy and avoids discussion of a nationwide ban,” without including an editor’s note to explain the significant change. Mediaite was able to grab an archived version of the story.
The modification occurred barely two hours after the Biden team criticized USA Today for the title, according to Mediaite. Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the Biden campaign manager, Brooke Goren, the deputy director of communications, and Kaitlyn Kash, an abortion rights activist, were present at the news conference.
According to one Biden-Harris staffer, “one especially egregiously inaccurate headline even suggested Trump, quote, ‘opposes a nationwide abortion ban and will leave it up to the vote of the people.”
In a statement, USA Today informed Fox News, “Our goal is to provide the facts as truthfully as we can. Headline updates are a regular element of our editorial process when we have breaking news. In this instance, the headline more accurately reflected the story.
Trump said in his Monday address that he “proudly” accepts responsibility for the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which gave states the authority to restrict or outlaw abortion. He went on to say that he is “strongly in support of” exclusions from the law for rape, incest, and motherhood.
“This is ultimately about the people’s will,” Trump said, later adding, “You have to follow your convictions on this matter, but never forget that winning elections is also necessary to rebuild our culture and, ultimately, to rescue our nation.”
President Joe Biden immediately indicated that if Trump were to return to the White House, he would still sign legislation restricting abortion rights on a federal level.

In an attempt to build on their previous electoral successes in areas where abortion was on the ballot, Democrats and the Biden team are aiming to make abortion a major campaign topic in 2024. The Left did not waste any time in denouncing “extreme abortion laws” that are “now enforceable since Trump destroyed Roe,” following the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday to uphold an 1864 statute that protects unborn fetuses from abortion in almost every circumstance.
In order to encourage voters to support Biden in November, Democrats in a number of battleground states, such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and now Arizona, are emphasizing their pro-abortion policies.
