DHS Pushes For Internet User “Risk Scores”

According to internal papers acquired by Vice, the DHS intended to establish a technique to calculate “risk scores” for social networking users in 2018 in the course of a campaign to detect “disinformation” activities called “Night Fury” by the DHS.

The DHS had collaborated with the University of Alabama to establish the “Night Fury” system, a concept that is eerily similar to the Chinese “social credit” score given to residents to check their adherence to the ruling system.

Vice’s study was launched with the goal of learning more about Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) initiatives to gather information on border arrivals, but it seems that in the process, Vice accidentally came across a vital part of the government’s massive social media censorship apparatus.

“The Contractor should devise a methodology for producing a ranking, or ‘Risk Score,’ connected with the identified accounts using these factors. One of the papers states that the Contractor must provide tools to automate the identifying process while recording performance metrics and KPIs linked to the automation of the identification process. According to DHS, the project was abandoned in 2019.

“The announcement highlights DHS’ ongoing commitment to social media analysis for a range of objectives. These new papers follow a revelation from Motherboard that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) was examining passengers’ social media at the U.S. border utilizing an AI-powered tool dubbed Babel X.

Vice investigated the records and found that the DHS ended the program in 2019. But in other locations, the government’s initiatives to fight “disinformation” on social media, a worry that only became more prominent after President Trump was elected, multiplied.

By the 2020 presidential election, a large network of censors had emerged, which includes deep state groups, nongovernmental groups, journalists, academics, and the tech titans of Silicon Valley. Throughout the presidential election in 2020 as well as thereafter, this “censorship-industrial complex” effectively ending any pretense of free expression on social media.
