The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision in Snitko v. United States is a major victory for the protection of our Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. This case, which began with a 2021 FBI raid on US Private Vaults in California, exposes the disturbing trend of the government overreaching its authority and blatantly disregarding citizens’ constitutional rights. The FBI’s actions in this raid, under the guise of an “inventory search,” were nothing short of a blatant violation of the Fourth Amendment. The court rightly called out the FBI for exceeding the scope of their warrant and conducting an illegal search.
What’s particularly alarming is the government’s attempt to sweep this massive constitutional violation under the rug. Their sudden reversal, offering to destroy records of the FBI’s search, is a transparent attempt to avoid setting a precedent that would limit their ability to conduct such unconstitutional searches in the future. It’s indicative of a deeper problem within the FBI and the Department of Justice – a willingness to bend or even break the law to suit their purposes.
The implications of this ruling are significant. It challenges the government’s frequent use of “inventory searches” as a cover for conducting broader investigations without proper warrants. This case should serve as a wake-up call to every American about the ongoing erosion of our constitutional rights. The fact that no one was prosecuted or held accountable for this gross violation of rights is a stark reminder of how far we have strayed from the principles of justice and accountability.
We must demand more from our law enforcement agencies. The FBI and the Department of Justice should be protectors of our liberties, not threats to them.
