According to a report released this week by the House Judiciary Committee along with the Select Subcommittee regarding the Weaponization of the United States Government, the FBI, and a Ukrainian intelligence agency conducted a “censorship operation” to pressure social media companies to block users that were allegedly circulating “Russian disinformation.”
According to the study, several of the accounts that were selected for deletion belonged to Americans.
The FBI allegedly pushed Instagram, Facebook, Google, and YouTube to “censor Americans participating in constitutionally safeguarded speech online” at the Ukrainian Security Service’s request, according to documents that were obtained by the committee through Meta, the parent firm of Instagram and Facebook, and also Alphabet, the parent company of YouTube and Google.
The committee thus charged the FBI with breaching the First Amendment rights of American consumers.
“The FBI, the federal law enforcement organization in charge of thwarting foreign malicious influence, assisted with censorship demands to American social media firms on behalf of a Ukrainian intel agency that had been compromised by Russian-aligned actors,” according to the report.
American accounts were detected by the Ukrainian agency and the FBI in certain cases, including one validated by the U.S. State Dept. and many by American journalists.
The committee claimed that the FBI probably didn’t thoroughly examine the list of information that the Ukrainian intelligence agency gave them since they contained American accounts. According to the study, Russian accomplices and double agents were inside the Ukrainian agency at the point that the demands were made.
According to the committee’s findings, the FBI contacted the major social media platforms over a dozen times during March 2022 alone.
On March 1, one of these letters was posted to Facebook. Two spreadsheets containing “15,865 individual pieces of content on Instagram” plus “5,165 Fb accounts” were included in the FBI agent’s email.
“I have a couple more Instagram and Facebook pages that, according to the [SSU], promote Russian misinformation,” the special agent said in his email, “for your consideration and, if necessary, action.”
