According to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, a lady was detained this week for hurling a glass of wine at Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida.
“Walton County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed reports indicating our agency responded to a disturbance at a gathering in Miramar Beach this week that involved Rep. Matt Gaetz,” the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook. “Selena Chambers, 41, of Tallahassee, was arrested after responding deputies discovered she deliberately threw an alcoholic beverage at Rep. Gaetz after yelling obscenities at him. She was charged with violence against a government official and was given $1,000 bail. She was discharged the next day.”
As reported by the Pensacola News Journal, the lady has been charged with misdemeanor battery in addition to battery of an elected official, which is a felony crime in Florida.
Gaetz stated on an episode of his “Firebrand” show that the event happened when he and his wife were attending the South Walton Beaches Wine and Food Festival. Gaetz claimed that the woman tossed a drink at him and another man he was chatting with.
Gaetz intends to file charges. He stated that citizens have the freedom to express themselves and even criticize prominent officials. “But there is a severe risk of escalation if we start allowing things to be hurled or thrown or if we let individuals get harmed,” he cautioned.
According to CNN, Chambers stated in a police complaint that “she had been walking and stumbled and spilled her drink on Rep. Gaetz.”
“Blaine Odom stated that he was speaking with Rep. Gaetz when he noticed Selena Chambers yelling at them. Chambers had a drink in her right hand.” According to ABC News, “Chambers threw the container into the air, and the alcohol from the glass landed on Rep. Gaetz and on Odom’s right shoulder. Chambers then yelled and flipped him off as she walked away. Odom stated that he saw the drink drop on both Rep. Gaetz and himself. Odom said that the alcohol Chambers tossed on him had drenched his clothes. Odom stated that he intended to file charges against Chambers.”
According to the Associated Press, defense lawyer Matthew A. Karp stated that “investigation has early on revealed Rep. Gaetz as having been both the aggressor as well as agitator, and we are looking forward to obtaining his deposition. My client, Selena Chambers, upholds her innocence regarding this matter,” Karp added, “and we plan to strongly fight against the accusations made by Rep. Gaetz.”
“I will never jeopardize the safety of Northwestern Floridians. I will file charges against this person in order to maintain the decency that our town deserves. Thank you to the members of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office for acting quickly,” Gaetz stated in a news statement.
