Officers from Mexico’s National Institute of Migration (INM) freed 206 migrants from Central America who were imprisoned in a locked semi-trailer. The migrants from Guatemala and Honduras, including women and children, said that cartel traffickers sedated them to suppress the desire to relieve themselves while traveling. This week, the migrants were discovered in the Mexican state of Veracruz.
The tractor-trailer was found by officials from many agencies close to Cardel, Veracruz, according to INM. The secret human cargo in the trailer was discovered during an inspection. Twenty among the 206 migrants discovered inside were unaccompanied minors who were carrying wristbands with their identities attached.
The trailer reportedly had a second level added by constructing a support framework, according to the authorities. As a result, the trailer could hold more migrants. To circumvent the authorities’ use of X-ray equipment to find the migrants concealed within, another alteration was done. The migrants were discovered to be dehydrated and said they had been forced to consume an unidentified drug to suppress body functions as they were being transported.
INM reported that there were 144 family units, 42 single people, along with 20 unaccompanied migrant children in the group.
The INM officials met three incidences of migrant smuggling with tractor-trailers in only two days. In all, three tractor-trailers throughout the Mexican state of Veracruz were found to contain over 500 migrants.
In the first incident, 107 migrants were found being carried on a trailer from Veracruz to Puebla by Mexican law enforcement officials. The tractor-trailer’s driver was pulled over by police for speeding. The migrants were located when the truck was examined. The migrants involved in that event were from Nicaragua, El Salvador, Cuba, Guatemala, and Honduras. Five more defendants linked to the investigation and the vehicle’s driver are now being charged with smuggling migrants.
