The Pentagon, while pledging transparency, has been evasive in addressing inquiries about this recording. At a recent briefing, Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder emphasized the ongoing internal review and Secretary Austin’s commitment to improving transparency regarding his medical treatment. However, details about whether the findings of this review will be shared publicly remain unclear.
The dispatcher, in response to the aide’s request during the call, explained that while emergency services could reduce visibility within residential areas, they were legally mandated to use flashing lights and sirens on main roads. The Pentagon has not clarified if Austin himself directed this request for discretion or if it originated independently from his security team or staff.
This development comes as the Pentagon has announced a 30-day investigation into the communication breakdown following Austin’s hospitalization. The focus of this inquiry is to determine how and when Austin delegated his duties, especially considering that Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, seemingly unaware of Austin’s condition, was performing routine duties on his behalf while vacationing in Puerto Rico.
