A joint Chinese Navy-Russian Navy Surface Action group of vessels was observed by the U.S. Coast Guard about 75 nautical miles off of the Kiska Island in Alaska.
According to a Coast Guard press statement, the cutter Kimball discovered a Chinese guided-missile cruiser earlier this month off the isolated Kiska Island.
According to the press release, three of the foreign ships were owned by China, while four of them, including a naval destroyer, were subsequently determined to be Russian ships.
The Chinese and Russian ships were cruising freely and unopposed 12 nautical miles outside of American territorial seas.
But the ships sailed into the United States’ EEZ, a 200-nautical-mile-wide area that is off the American shores.
The U.S. Coast Guard has promised to track and meet the ships of nations it dubbed “strategic rivals” in reaction to the combined Russian-Chinese naval presence that was near U.S. seas.
According to the news release, “The Kimball crew is now working under Mission Frontier Sentinel, which is designed to meet the presence of our rivals with presence of our own when they operate in and near U.S. seas.” On Sept. 19, the first vessel was discovered operating close to U.S. seas.”
According to the news statement that was released on Monday, a Coast Guard C-130 Hercules then assisted the Kimball in its own reaction to the Chinese and Russian naval patrol.
According to USNI News, in September 2021, Chinese navy boats, including a surface action group transiting about 50 miles away from Aleutian Island chain, were intercepted by Coast Guard cutters stationed in the North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea.
Rear Adm. Nathan Moore, commander of the Seventeenth Coast Guard District, stated that “the formation has been operating in accordance with international norms and rules,” but “we will meet presence-with-presence to make sure there are no disruptions to United States’ interests near Alaska.”
The Russian Defense Ministry stated on September 15 that the two fleets have been cooperating to conduct a coordinated naval patrol operation in the Pacific Ocean.
