California Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell, who was recently removed from the House Intel Committee for having a relationship with a Chinese spy, obviously knows how to spend other people’s money.
Swalwell’s campaign spent approximately $583,000 in travel expenses during the 2022 election season, using donated funds to pay for limos, planes, yachts, and luxurious hotels.
As other Americans are struggling to make ends meet due to Biden’s inflation, Swalwell was living the high life at resorts across the world. Consider the following “political” expenses:
- $20,240 to the Ritz-Carlton
- $3,538.94 at the Ritz Hotel in Paris
- $1,800 at the five-star Hotel La Maison Champs-Elysées in Paris
- $28,646 at Just Dreaming Boat Charters
- $4,708 at Loews in Miami
- Childcare charges totaled $131,000
How do you spend $131,000 just on childcare? Was each child kept in a different room at the Plaza for the duration of the campaign? Swalwell has three kids, so it translates to about $44,000 per child.
According to his official website’s “Meet Eric” section, “growing up in what is now California’s Fourteenth Congressional District has taught Swalwell a lot about strong ideals, hard work, and planning for a better future.” Somewhere along the way, he discovered that you could live a very luxurious life using people’s hard-earned money that they had donated to him.
I understand that life has become more expensive under Joe Biden, and that campaign costs pile up, but I’m not sure how spending thousands of dollars on fancy hotel stays helps you reach out to California people in your constituency. Perhaps the expenses were so high because he needed to find housing for all those employees?
Except that throughout the 2022 election season, he only had two salaried aides. That’s presumably because his seat was never seriously threatened. He received close to 69% of the vote, and the district has not had a Republican representative since 1993.
Swalwell is no stranger to making headlines; he can be counted on to provide ludicrous “hot takes” that he believes demonstrate his towering brilliance but actually make him look like a fool. As my colleague Nick Arama recently wrote, he retweeted a Carpe Donktum post that said, “I want to applaud you @ericswalwell @RepSwalwell for standing up and telling the truth!”
The foolish representative shared the message, believing he was being congratulated on the internet, but it was actually a video of him giving a speech with fart noises added. (It is fairly funny if you like juvenile comedy.)
Trump pounced on Swalwell this week, ridiculing him for being kicked off the Intelligence Committee following his romance with Chinese agent Fang Fang:
President Donald J. Trump:
“Little respected Rep. Eric Swalwell was just kicked off the Intelligence Committee for reasons of “Integrity and lack of Intelligence” &, for having the poor judgment of dating and falling desperately in love with a Chinese Spy, Fang Fang… pic.twitter.com/898QJss75r

While it’s amusing to mock Swalwell, his extravagant campaign spending raises real concerns. Why spend over $30,000 on a yacht? All that time spent in Paris? Did donors truly believe that Swalwell would spend more than $100,000 on childcare?
When you have outspent Pelosi, you know you’re doing something special.
